Mackay, Queensland
What families in Mackay usually arrange
Mackay owners spend a lot of time outdoors with pets on the northern beaches, along the Pioneer River and up in the rainforest around Eungella. Rivers and estuaries here are crocodile habitat, so any plan to scatter ashes near water should keep well back from the banks. For beaches and reserves, check with the council first, and pick a calm, dry-season morning.
From about December to March, Mackay's wet season brings heavy humidity, big rain and the chance of a cyclone. A pet's body should be cooled fast in that weather: lay your pet in the air-conditioned part of the house, on a towel, with ice bricks around the chest and belly. If floodwater cuts a road or a cyclone warning is up, a properly cooled body can safely wait a day.
Home-visit vets are thin on the ground near Mackay, so many small-pet euthanasias happen at the clinic. You can still make it gentle. Bring your pet in their usual carrier with a handful of hay, bring the bonded partner if it's calm enough to travel, and ask for the first or last appointment of the day, when the waiting room is quiet and nobody is rushed.
With roughly 80,000 residents, Mackay is the 7th-largest of the 8 Queensland communities we cover.
Our estimate
960
Mackay: small mammal-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
80,000 ÷ 2.5 = 32,000 households; × 3% (small mammal) = 960. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
3%[1]
3% of Australian households keep small mammals such as rabbits or guinea pigs.
71%[2]
Australian cremation rates hovered around 70-72% between 2020 and 2023, with Sydney and Melbourne often above 80%.
6 million[3]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[4]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
If a number here surprises you, the primary material is American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record; we only apply it to this.

What the local cremation rate tells you
About 71%[2] of people in Australia are cremated, so cremation feels ordinary here, and that carries over to pets. Families rarely feel they need to explain why they want a rabbit's ashes home. Crematoria are well established and used to small animals. Where cremation is this familiar, the useful question isn't whether to cremate but how: private or communal, and how your provider keeps a pet weighing a pound or two apart from much larger animals.
That Australia rate is a human one, published by FuneralSmart (2023). We quote it for Mackay only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons and small-pet aftercare in Mackay
Seasons shape small-pet aftercare more than people expect. Hot spells bring heatstroke and flystrike in rabbits; wet, cold spells are hard on outdoor guinea pigs and elderly rabbits. In Mackay, ask your vet what they see most at this time of year, and whether they'd suggest changes for the survivors: moving a hutch into shade or indoors, adding extra bedding, or checking droppings daily while a bonded partner grieves. A small body itself is easy to keep safe for a day in a lined box somewhere cool.

Small pet cremation prices for Mackay
In Australia, a survey of listed prices puts the median individual cremation for pets up to 5 kg at AUD 412[5], a band that covers almost every rabbit, guinea pig and ferret. Communal cremation starts from AUD 80[6]. In New Zealand, an Auckland crematorium lists NZD 305 individual and NZD 55 communal for a 2 to 7 kg pet[7]. Quotes around Mackay should sit in similar territory.

Garden burial, disease and the rules in Queensland
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[9], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[10]. Whatever applies in Queensland, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
In Australia, rabbit calicivirus is deliberately released to control wild rabbits, so vaccinating pet rabbits is standard advice and a sudden death should be discussed with your vet before burial. Keeping pet rabbits is illegal in Queensland, and ferrets are banned there too. Summer heat is a serious risk for rabbits and guinea pigs across much of the country.
The rules that apply across Queensland (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Queensland page. Mackay may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A calm plan for the next 24 hours
- Tell the children simply and honestly. Use the word died rather than gone to sleep, which can frighten younger children.
- Let them see and stroke their pet if they'd like, with the body tucked into a fleece or well-loved blanket.
- Give them a job: lining the box, drawing something, or picking a toy or handful of hay to send along with their pet.
- Keep your pet cool in a lidded box in the coldest room you have until you've all agreed what to do.
- Choose a goodbye the children can take part in. That might be burying their pet in the garden, or a little ceremony once a Mackay provider has returned the ashes.
- Keep an eye on the bonded survivor too, and let the children help check that they're eating.
Ways Mackay families remember rabbits and guinea pigs
Mackay is spread out: low-set brick houses and older high-set Queenslanders on big blocks, newer estates toward the northern beaches, and homes scattered through the cane fields of the Pioneer Valley. A pickup in town is rarely a problem, though a farm address down a cane track takes longer. Tell the provider your suburb or road, and mention any stairs if your home is up on stumps.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Australia?
For people, yes: about 71%[2] of Australia deaths end in cremation, according to FuneralSmart (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Mackay follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I bury my rabbit in the garden in Queensland?
In most places you can bury a pet on land you own, sometimes with local conditions attached. Check with your local council or county if you're unsure, and ask your landlord if you rent. Dig deep enough that foxes and dogs won't reach your pet, set a slab on top, take extra care if your rabbit was put to sleep, and call a vet first if the death was sudden, because of RHDV2.
How many households in Mackay keep rabbits or other small pets?
By our estimate, around 960 households in Mackay keep a rabbit or similar small pet. We calculate this from the city's population, the national average household size and the national share of households with small pets, so it's a rough guide rather than a count. It's a reminder that plenty of local families have been through this loss too.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Mackay?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[11], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
Could my rabbit's sudden death near Mackay be a virus?
It could. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease, including the RHDV2 strain, is found in wild and pet rabbits in the UK, across much of Europe and in Australia and New Zealand, and it can kill a rabbit within hours. Vaccination is standard advice for that reason. If a rabbit dies without warning, talk to your vet before burying the body or cleaning the hutch, to protect your other rabbits.
