Private cremation: your pet's ashes and nobody else's
Your pet is cremated on their own and all the ash that comes back belongs to them. This is the service most families mean when they say "cremation", and the one to choose if you want to keep ashes at home, scatter them in the garden later or have a pinch set into jewelry.
For small mammals, the questions that matter are about handling. A good provider will explain how they stop a 1 kg guinea pig's remains being lost in a chamber built for a Labrador, usually with a tray or a smaller unit. One US insurer's published ranges are communal $30-200; private $100-500+[2], and rabbits and guinea pigs sit at the bottom of any weight-banded list. Ashes typically come home in a small tin, scatter tube or velvet pouch, with a certificate. Many providers take about 5-10 days[3] to return them. By our estimate a median pet rabbit returns about 74 g[4] of ash and a median guinea pig about 37 g[5], so a keepsake-sized urn is usually plenty. Communal cremation: a gentle, lower-cost goodbye
Several animals are cremated together and the ashes are scattered or buried by the provider, often in a memorial garden. Nothing comes home. For many small-pet owners this is a completely reasonable choice, particularly when a child already said goodbye at home and a garden grave isn't possible.
It's the cheapest cremation route: the UK competition regulator found in its pricing appendix that communal cremation 2x to 5x cheaper[6] than individual cremation for the same weight. Ask where the ashes end up, and whether you can visit. Some providers send a certificate or a small memorial card, which children often like to keep. Across eight markets whose price lists we compared, private cremation costs roughly twice the communal price at the median, by our calculation[7].

Partitioned and joint cremation for bonded pairs
Partitioned cremation places several pets in the chamber at once, separated by trays or bricks, and each family gets ashes back. It sits between private and communal on price. With very small bodies, separation is harder to keep perfect, so if having only your pet's ashes matters, pay for private and get it confirmed in writing.
Joint cremation is the opposite choice, made on purpose. When bonded rabbits or a pair of guinea pigs die close together, some families ask for them to be cremated together so their ashes are mixed and share one urn. If the second pet is still alive, many people keep the first pet's ashes and later ask for the two to be combined. Either way, tell the provider exactly what you want, because the default will be to keep them apart.

Home burial and pet cemetery plots for small pets
We don't dig graves, but we can help you plan one and point you to local rules. Home burial works well for a naturally deceased rabbit or guinea pig in a garden you own. Use a biodegradable box or wrap them in a cotton pillowcase, choose a spot away from vegetable beds and water, and dig deep enough that foxes won't disturb it. If you rent, have no garden or want a place you can keep visiting after a move, a pet cemetery is another route. One pet insurer's published US prices run $400-$1,500+[8], with small pets at the lower end. For rabbits, a sudden unexplained death is a reason to speak to a vet before any burial: the RHDV2 virus, as Wyoming's wildlife agency explains in its RHDV2 factsheet, shows long environmental survival[9], so a garden grave could expose wild or future pet rabbits.
Getting them there
Collection, vet coordination and at-home goodbyes
Small pets are easy to carry, so many families drive their pet to the crematorium or leave them with their vet. Home collection is still worth asking about if you don't drive, can't face the journey or have young children at home. Most people care a great deal how the body is carried. One US survey of owners' end-of-life expectations had a blunt headline: "64% reject trash bag[10]", so ask what the driver brings.

Keepsakes that suit a small companion
Prints are harder with small feet, but a clay impression of a rabbit's back foot or a guinea pig's front paw is very achievable if it's done before cremation. A fur clipping tied with thread fits in a locket. Some families keep the harness a ferret wore on walks, or a chewed willow ball.

Questions people ask
Is private cremation worth it for such a small pet?
It depends on what you want afterwards. If you'd like to keep, scatter or later bury the ashes, private is the only option that returns your pet alone. If a garden grave or a communal cremation feels right, there's no need to pay more. Size doesn't make the choice less valid either way.
Can two bonded rabbits be cremated together?
Yes, if you ask. Some providers will cremate a bonded pair together so the ashes are combined in one urn, which many families find comforting. If the partners die months apart, you can keep the first set of ashes and ask for them to be combined later. Make the request in writing, since the standard process keeps pets separate.
Do ferrets need anything different from rabbits?
Not much. Ferrets usually weigh between about 2.5 and 4 lb, so they fall in the same small-pet price band. Families often want to include the ferret's hammock, harness or a favourite sock, so check which items can go into the chamber and which should be removed and returned to you.
Is water cremation available for small pets?
In some areas, yes. Aquamation uses water and alkali rather than flame, and the water used per pet is about 1–3 pet baths[11]. It returns bone ash like flame cremation. Availability is patchy, so it's worth asking whether any provider near you offers it for small mammals.
Does pet insurance pay for small pet cremation?
Usually not. Standard policies in the US and UK generally cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary but not cremation or burial. A few US add-ons pay toward end-of-life costs. Exotic pet policies for rabbits and ferrets vary widely, so read the exclusions or ask your insurer directly.
