Using the calculator

Five inputs, one honest price range

Rabbit or small mammal is preselected at 4 lb. Change the animal if you need to, enter their weight in pounds or kilograms, choose the type of cremation and your country, then tick any extras you're considering. The range updates as you go, with a line-by-line table underneath so you can see where each part of the total comes from.

  • Weight: use a kitchen scale if you can. A rabbit is often 1.5 to 3 kg, a guinea pig about 1 kg, a ferret 1.2 to 2 kg.
  • Type: communal (no ashes back), partitioned (ashes back, shared chamber), private (cremated alone) or witnessed (you can be present).
  • Country: US, UK, Canada, Australia or somewhere else. The first four show local currency; somewhere else shows US prices in dollars as a guide.
  • Extras: home or vet pickup, after-hours or weekend service, a paw print keepsake, an upgraded urn and at-home euthanasia.

Behind the numbers

Where the calculator's prices come from

For the US, the calculator uses CareCredit's national price guide, which groups pets by weight. Its lightest band covers everything up to 30 lb, so every rabbit, guinea pig, ferret, chinchilla and hedgehog lands there. For the UK, it uses the competition regulator's price research, which puts communal cremation of a small pet at the bottom of a scale running GBP 50 to GBP 300+[2].

Extras are added as typical add-on ranges rather than sourced averages, and labelled that way: roughly $50 to $150 for home collection, $75 to $200 after hours, $25 to $75 for a paw print and $50 to $300 for an upgraded urn. Each extra is marked as a typical add-on range in the breakdown, and the sources are listed under the result, so you can see what's a published price and what's a typical range.

A worked example

Costing a 2 kg rabbit with home collection

Say your rabbit weighed 2 kg (about 4.4 lb), you're in the US, you'd like private cremation, and you don't drive so you'd need collection from home. The calculator starts from the private range for the lightest band and adds a typical collection fee.

Worked example: 2 kg rabbit, US, private cremation with home collection
Line itemLowHigh
Private cremation (up to 30 lb band)$100$175
Home or vet pickup (typical add-on)$50$150
Estimated total$150$330
Same rabbit, communal, no collection$45$75
A Netherland Dwarf rabbit sitting upright on a sunny kitchen floor beside a small woven basket of fresh greens
Rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets all fall in the lightest weight band on most price lists.

The tool rounds the top of the total up to the nearest $10, which is why it reads $330. If you drove the rabbit to the provider yourself, the total would drop back toward the private-only range. That single choice often makes the biggest difference for small pets, because the collection fee can be as much as the cremation itself.

What your range means for a small pet

Small pets pay more per pound than large ones, because much of a provider's cost is handling, paperwork and returning ashes, not the size of the body. Our own analysis of US prices shows the per-pound cost of private cremation stepping down as pets get heavier ($9.2 -> $4.2 -> $4.0 per lb[3] at 15, 60 and 100 lb). For a 2 lb guinea pig, the per-pound figure looks high, but the total is still modest.

The gap between private and communal is the other number to notice. In the UK, the competition regulator found in its pricing appendix that communal cremation 2x to 5x cheaper[4] than individual cremation for the same weight. If ashes don't matter to you, or a garden burial is possible, the aftercare options comparison shows how those routes stack up.

Know the limits

What the calculator can't tell you

It can't see your local market. City prices run higher than rural ones, a vet may add a handling fee on top of the crematorium's price, and some providers bundle a simple urn while others charge for it. It also can't tell you whether a provider that calls its service "individual" is truly private or partitioned.

That's why a written total matters. In the UK, only 52%[5] of cremation buyers remembered being given price information at all. Our guide to comparing written quotes lists the line items to ask about, and the memorial budget planner adds keepsakes and a farewell to the cremation cost.

Next steps

From an estimate to a real quote

  1. Note your range and whether collection is included.
  2. Ask your vet or a local provider for a written price for the same service.
  3. Check the type of cremation is confirmed in writing.
  4. Compare, then decide in your own time.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to cremate a rabbit?

In the US, private cremation for a rabbit usually falls in or just below the lightest published band of about $100 to $175, while communal cremation runs roughly $45 to $75. Home collection, an upgraded urn or a paw print cost extra. Ask for a written total that names the type of cremation.

Is guinea pig cremation cheaper than rabbit cremation?

Sometimes, but often not by much. Most price lists group every pet up to around 30 lb together, so a guinea pig and a rabbit pay the same. A few providers charge a lower rate for very small animals. The bigger savings come from choosing communal cremation or dropping off your pet yourself.

Does pet insurance cover small pet cremation?

Rarely. Standard policies in the US and UK tend to cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary, but not cremation or burial. Some US end-of-life add-ons pay a fixed amount toward aftercare. Exotic pet policies for rabbits and ferrets vary, so check the exclusions section of yours.

Why does collection cost almost as much as the cremation?

Because a driver's time and fuel cost the same whether they're collecting a guinea pig or a spaniel. For large pets that cost is a small share of the bill; for small pets it can double it. If you're able to, driving your pet in yourself is the simplest way to lower the total.

  3. [3] Private cremation cost per pound falls with size in the US: roughly $9.2/lb for a 15 lb pet, $4.2/lb at 60 lb and about $4.0/lb at 100 lb. Our estimate: band midpoint price / representative weight: 0-30 lb (midpoint $137.50 / 15 lb) = $9.17/lb; 51-70 lb ($250 / 60 lb) = $4.17/lb; over 90 lb ($400 / ~100 lb) = $4.00/lb. How we calculate.
