Planning tools sized for rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets

A median pet rabbit returns about 74 g[1] of ashes, far less than most calculators assume. These tools start from small-pet weights and show their working.

  • Built around weights of 0.5 to 5 lb
  • Every range shows its source

Planning tools sized for rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets

Start here

Why small pets need their own numbers

Most pet aftercare calculators are built for cats and dogs, so a 1 kg guinea pig ends up with an urn suggestion the size of a coffee tin. Our tools accept small weights, explain what a tiny result means in everyday terms and flag where the usual rules of thumb stretch thin.

Each one runs in your browser, needs no account and updates as you type. None of them replaces a written quote, but they'll help you know roughly what to expect before you speak to anyone. Weigh your pet on a kitchen scale if you can; guesses for small animals are often off by half.

Not sure where to begin?

Which small pet tool to open first

  • Your pet has just died and money is on your mind: start with the cost calculator, then the budget planner.
  • You're torn between the garden and cremation: the aftercare options comparison sets them side by side.
  • You've chosen private cremation: the ashes estimator, then the urn size calculator, so you don't buy something far too large.
  • Several people want a keepsake: the ashes sharing planner, before you order any jewelry.
  • Your pet is still with you but getting older: the pet age calculator, then our pre-planning guide.

If you'd prefer someone to do the sums with real local prices, send us your pet's details and we'll reply by email.

Price

Cremation cost calculator: what will it cost here?

Enter your pet's weight, your country and the type of cremation, then tick any extras such as home collection. You'll get a low-to-high range and a line-by-line breakdown. In the US, the lightest published band covers pets up to 30 lb at communal $45-75; private $100-175[2], and rabbits and guinea pigs usually sit near the bottom of it. Open the full cost calculator.

What comes back

Ashes weight estimator: how much will there be?

This one answers the question small-pet owners ask most: will there be anything at all? Ashes usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[3], a pet-industry rule of thumb close to the roughly 3.5% found in a study of cremated remains that crematories still use as a benchmark, so by our estimate a median guinea pig returns around 37 g[4]. The estimator turns that into something you can picture, like a few spoonfuls of sugar. Try the ashes weight estimator.

Choosing a container

Urn size calculator: avoid an urn that's far too big

The standard rule is one cubic inch of urn space per pound of body weight, plus a margin. For a 4.5 lb rabbit that's about 5 cubic inches, which is a keepsake urn rather than even the smallest standard one. The calculator shows the main volume and how much would be left if you set some aside for jewelry. Use the urn size calculator.

Making the decision

Aftercare options compared: burial, private or communal?

Move sliders for what matters to you (cost, keeping ashes, environmental impact, speed, a sense of ceremony) and the tool ranks home burial, pet cemetery, private, communal and water cremation. For small pets, home burial scores unusually well on cost, so it's a useful way to test whether cremation is really what you want. Compare aftercare options.

Before the end

Pet age calculator: how old is your rabbit, really?

Short lifespans mean small pets become seniors fast. Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years[5], according to a VetCompass study of rabbit records, while the Merck Veterinary Manual puts ferrets at 6-10 years[6]. The calculator converts your pet's age, shows their life stage and suggests when a quiet aftercare plan makes sense. Check your pet's age.

Family

Ashes sharing planner: a keepsake for everyone?

With only a few tablespoons of ash, sharing needs care. The ashes sharing planner shows how many pendants or mini keepsakes a rabbit's or guinea pig's ashes can fill, and what stays for the main urn. It's especially handy when siblings each want something of the family pet.

The whole bill

Memorial budget planner: the total, with no surprises

The memorial budget planner adds everything together: cremation, collection, urn, a print, a small garden plaque. Edit any line to match a quote you've received and it keeps a running low-to-high total.

For small pets, the extras can easily cost more than the cremation itself: a decorative urn, a framed print and a collection fee add up quickly. Seeing the full total early lets you decide which pieces really matter, and it's a gentle way to check a quote you've been given at the vet's desk.

Questions people ask

Are the prices in these tools real quotes?

No. They're ranges built from published price surveys and typical add-on costs, and each one shows its source in small print. They're meant to tell you whether a quote is in the normal range. For an actual price, send us your details or ask a local provider for a written total.

Do the tools work for chinchillas and hedgehogs?

Yes, as long as you enter your pet's weight. The weight-based tools (cost, ashes, urn size and sharing) work for any small mammal. For very light pets such as hedgehogs, expect the ash estimate to be a spoonful or two, and check with the provider how they return such small amounts.

What if I don't know my pet's weight?

Use a typical figure as a starting point: many pet rabbits weigh around 2 kg (4.5 lb), guinea pigs around 1 kg (2.2 lb) and ferrets between about 1.2 and 2 kg. Dwarf and giant rabbit breeds differ a lot, so a kitchen scale reading will give a much better answer.

Is anything I enter saved or sent anywhere?

The tools run in your browser and don't need an account. Nothing you type into a calculator is sent to us unless you choose to fill in the request form separately. You can close the page and nothing is kept.

Why does the urn calculator suggest such a small urn?

Because small pets produce very little ash. The rule of about one cubic inch per pound means a 2 lb guinea pig needs only two or three cubic inches of space. Standard pet urns start far bigger, so a keepsake or mini urn is usually the right fit, with room to spare.
