Saying goodbye to a rabbit or guinea pig in Bunbury

Bunbury, Western Australia

How Bunbury families say goodbye to small pets

Bunbury summers are hot and dry, with bushfire risk on the fringes, and winters are cool and wet as fronts roll in off the Indian Ocean. On a scorching day, shift your pet into the coolest room, rest the body on an old sheet and wrap frozen bottles alongside, then book collection for that day. In winter, a cool laundry holds things steady overnight.

Bunbury is a regional city about two hours south of Perth, with suburban houses on good-sized blocks, newer estates spreading toward Australind, Eaton and Dalyellup, and bush and rural lots further out. A home pickup is usually simple to organise. Say which suburb you live in, mention any long driveway or locked gate, or bring your pet in by car, as lots of local families do.

Home-visit vets are thin on the ground near Bunbury, so many small-pet euthanasias happen at the clinic. You can still make it gentle. Bring your pet in their usual carrier with a handful of hay, bring the bonded partner if it's calm enough to travel, and ask for the first or last appointment of the day, when the waiting room is quiet and nobody is rushed.

About 75,000 people live in Bunbury, which makes it the 2nd-largest of the 2 Western Australia communities we cover.

Our pages for Perth (96 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Bunbury as well.

Our estimate

900

How many small mammal-owning households Bunbury has (estimate)

How we calculated this

75,000 ÷ 2.5 = 30,000 households; × 3% (small mammal) = 900. Multi-pet homes count once.

3%[1]

3% of Australian households keep small mammals such as rabbits or guinea pigs.

71%[2]

Australian cremation rates hovered around 70-72% between 2020 and 2023, with Sydney and Melbourne often above 80%.

6 million[3]

About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

4.3 years[4]

Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.

We built the this numbers from O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record and Animal Medicines Australia, Pets in Australia 2025 (media release), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A small pet at home in Bunbury

Burial or cremation: the local habit

Pet crematoria tend to be plentiful in Australia, where roughly 71%[2] of people are cremated, and that usually means shorter waits. Some will cremate a rabbit or guinea pig within a day or two of drop-off and let you collect the ashes that same week. If timing matters to you, perhaps because a child is leaving for camp or a relative is visiting, ask for an expected return date before you choose.

For the Australia figure we rely on FuneralSmart (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Bunbury rather than as pet data.

Heat, cold and timing in Bunbury

Whatever the weather in Bunbury, the rule for a small pet is the same: keep the body cool, covered and out of the sun. A rabbit or guinea pig cools and stiffens faster than a dog, so wrap them gently soon after death while they're still easy to position, then place them in a box lined with their bedding. In warm weather, a sealed bag inside the box and a spot in the fridge or a cooler keeps them peaceful for a day or two. In cold weather, an unheated garage does the same job.

Budgeting for a small pet's aftercare in Bunbury

Listed prices differ widely between Australian states, from AUD 150 to 1,824 in New South Wales and AUD 199 to 749 in Victoria[5], mostly because of pet size and package extras. For a rabbit or guinea pig near Bunbury, ask for the smallest band only. RSPCA Queensland aims to return memorial packages within 14 days[6], a useful yardstick when a provider gives you a date.

Garden burial, disease and the rules in Western Australia

In the US, the USDA asks rabbit owners not to dispose of a rabbit's body without first consulting a veterinarian or animal health officials, because of RHDV2. That advice sits alongside any rules in Western Australia. In practice it means one phone call to the practice before you dig, any time a rabbit dies suddenly or for no clear reason. Guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas can't catch this virus.

In Australia, rabbit calicivirus is deliberately released to control wild rabbits, so vaccinating pet rabbits is standard advice and a sudden death should be discussed with your vet before burial. Keeping pet rabbits is illegal in Queensland, and ferrets are banned there too. Summer heat is a serious risk for rabbits and guinea pigs across much of the country.

Start with the Western Australia rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Bunbury's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

The first day, step by step

  1. Check gently and take a moment. Small pets often go quietly at night. If in doubt, watch the chest and feel for a pulse, or ring the vet, who can confirm over the phone or in person.
  2. Let the bonded partner say goodbye. Put the survivor with the body for 30 minutes to an hour somewhere calm, then separate them.
  3. Wrap your pet in a towel or fleece, then settle them into a carrier or shoebox. Find a cool spot for the box; if the weather is warm, seal them in a bag and use the fridge.
  4. Take a keepsake now if you want one. Snip a little fur, or press a foot into clay. Once the cremation has happened there's no second chance.
  5. Call your vet if the death was sudden. With a rabbit in particular, they'll want to talk you through RHDV2 before the hutch is cleaned or anything goes into the ground.
  6. Choose burial or cremation. For cremation, get a provider serving Bunbury to confirm in writing that it's private.
  7. Watch the survivor for the next few days: eating, drinking and droppings.

Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret

Pets in Bunbury spend much of their outdoor time along Back Beach and around Koombana Bay, where wild dolphins often come close to shore, or on the edges of the Leschenault Estuary at sunset. Families tend to picture their animal there. Beaches and reserves come under the council, so ask about scattering first, and choose a still morning when the sea breeze hasn't arrived.

Questions people ask

How do Australia attitudes to cremation compare?

FuneralSmart (2023) puts the Australia human cremation rate at about 71%[2]. We show it on the Bunbury page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?

You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.

What should I carry my small pet's body in?

A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.

Will a crematorium collect from a rural address near Bunbury?

Some will, often for a mileage fee, and others only collect from vets on set days. For a rabbit or guinea pig, driving your pet in yourself is usually easier and cheaper. If you can't drive, your vet can often keep your pet in their cold room until the next crematorium collection, usually within a few days.

Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Bunbury?

Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[8], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.

How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?

Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[9] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
