Vienna, Austria
Finding the right help for a small pet in Vienna
Vienna has hot summers and cold, grey winters, so how quickly you need to act depends on the season. In July, keep your pet in the coolest room with a cool pack under a towel; in January, a cool hallway may be enough for a short time. Old apartment buildings rarely have a garden of their own, and burial in the courtyard is not an option, which is one reason cremation is the usual choice in the city.
Most Viennese pet owners live in apartments, from old Altbau buildings with high ceilings and steep stairwells to large municipal housing blocks. If your pet dies at home, think about how they will be carried down, especially a larger animal in a building without a lift. Pet aftercare services in and around Vienna usually collect from your home or your vet. Mention the floor and whether there is a lift when you ask for options.
Big cities make it easy to rush. You can often get same-day collection in Vienna, but with a small pet there's seldom any need to pay for speed. A rabbit or guinea pig wrapped in a towel and kept cool will be fine overnight, and a calm morning drive to the vet or crematorium usually costs nothing extra. Save the urgent phone call for a heatwave, or for a sudden rabbit death that might be rabbit hemorrhagic disease.
Vienna is home to about 1,897,000 people.
6 million[1]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[2]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial or cremation: the local habit
If you've moved to Vienna from abroad, local customs around pets may feel unfamiliar. The practical steps are the same almost everywhere: keep your pet cool, decide on burial or cremation, and ask for prices in writing. Private cremation also has one advantage for families who may move again: a small pet's ashes travel easily, and you can decide on a final resting place later, wherever home turns out to be.
Keeping a small body cool in Vienna's climate
Chinchillas and degus handle humidity badly as well as heat, so in a close, muggy spell in Vienna watch them as carefully as you would in a hot one. If one dies, move the body to the coolest spot in the house within the hour. For the survivors, a dust bath, a cool tile to lie on and good airflow all help while the household finds its feet again.

Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Vienna
If burial appeals but you have no garden, Germany has around 120 pet cemeteries, with a grave costing about EUR 150 to 250[4], which is not far from an individual cremation. Dutch owners should also know that four insurers there offer some cremation cover[5], so read any policy you hold. Around Vienna, quote your pet's weight in kilos when asking for prices.

What the rules in Austria mean for a rabbit or ferret
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[7], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[8]. Whatever applies in Austria, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
A calm plan for the next 24 hours
- Book the appointment for a calm time of day, ideally with a vet who sees rabbits, guinea pigs or ferrets. Ask whether a home visit is possible.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, so you can simply ask the vet to take your pet afterwards, or bring a lined box to take them home.
- Bring the bonded companion if it's practical, or plan for them to see the body when you get home.
- Ask for a paw or foot print while you're there. Plenty of practices are happy to do this.
- Confirm private or communal in writing, and ask when the ashes will be ready to collect.
- If you plan a garden burial after euthanasia, dig well down and lay a slab over the grave, because the drug stays in the body and can harm wildlife.
Ways Vienna families remember rabbits and guinea pigs
Vienna is famous for its relationship with death and for taking funerals seriously, and that shows in how many residents treat a pet's passing. An individual cremation with ashes returned in a proper urn is a common choice, as is a small ceremony with family. When you ask for options, say whether you want a private cremation, whether you would like to attend, and whether you want ashes back.

Questions people ask
Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Vienna?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[9], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
What should I carry my small pet's body in?
A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
Is private cremation worth it for a guinea pig?
It is if you want the ashes back to keep, scatter or bury later, particularly if you might move house. If a garden grave or communal cremation feels right, there's no need to pay more. A guinea pig's size doesn't make either choice less meaningful; what matters is what you'll be glad of a year from now.
Is there a vet in Vienna who really knows rabbits and guinea pigs?
Most cities this size have at least one practice with exotics experience, but ask the right question: whether the vet regularly treats rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets or chinchillas, not just whether they'll see them. For end-of-life care, experience matters. Sedating a small, frightened animal calmly takes practice, and an experienced vet will also know which crematorium handles small pets well.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
Can I drop my rabbit off at the crematorium myself?
Usually, yes, and for a small pet it's often the simplest option. Call ahead so they expect you, bring your pet wrapped in a towel in a sturdy box, and keep the car cool. Dropping off yourself often avoids a collection fee and lets you see where your pet will be cared for. Some crematoria near Vienna will even let you wait.
