Brasilia, Federal District
What families in Brasilia usually arrange
The capital sits high on Brazil's central plateau, with a long dry season from roughly May to September when humidity drops very low and days stay warm. Heat still speeds things up, so keep your pet's body cool with ice packs wrapped in a towel and a shaded, ventilated room. From October the rains return with heavy afternoon storms, which can slow travel across the district, so arrange collection early in the day if you can.
Families here often want a quiet goodbye that fits a busy week in government offices and commutes from the satellite towns. A private cremation with ashes returned lets you choose the moment later: some people keep them at home, others take them to a favorite green spot, such as the edge of Lake Paranoa or the cerrado land around the city. Ask any provider what a private cremation includes before you agree to it.
Quotes across Brasilia vary more than the size of your pet would suggest. One provider may charge its lowest weight band, another may have a separate pocket-pet price, and a third may charge the same as for a cat. Because the amounts are modest, the differences look minor, but home collection and an urn upgrade can double a bill. Ask two places for a written total that names the service as private and lists every extra.
Brasilia's population is around 3,055,000.
9%[1]
Only about 8-9% of people who die in Brazil are cremated, according to Brazil's private cemetery and crematoria union (Sincep).
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How Brazil thinks about cremation
In Brazil, about 9%[1] of people are cremated, so there are fewer pet crematoria and they may cover a wide area. For you, that mostly affects timing: a vet may send small pets on a weekly run, and ashes can take a couple of weeks to come back. It doesn't affect how carefully your pet is handled. Ask the practice which provider they use and how often it collects.
Exame, citing Sincep (2024) is where the Brazil figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Brasilia tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Brasilia weather and your small pet
Local weather decides two things for small-pet owners in Brasilia: how quickly you need to arrange cremation or burial, and whether the ground is easy to dig. Rabbits and chinchillas are far more sensitive to heat than to cold, so summer deaths are both more common and more urgent. If it's hot, keep the body chilled and ask your vet or crematorium to take your pet the same day. If it's cold, you have longer, but frozen or waterlogged soil may mean cremating first and burying the ashes later.

Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Brasilia
In the UAE, where pet burial isn't generally permitted, shared cremation of a pet under 5 kg costs about AED 700 to 900[5]. Other countries vary a great deal. In Brasilia, your vet is the best first call, because they'll know which crematorium accepts small animals and whether ashes can be returned to you.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Federal District: Federal District costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial and scattering rules in Federal District
Rules in Federal District treat a rabbit or ferret like any other pet, which in practice means burial on land you own is usually fine and cremation is always allowed. The extra care small pets need is practical rather than legal: bury deep enough to stop foxes and dogs digging, keep away from vegetable beds, and never put a pet that was euthanized in a shallow grave.
A checklist for Brasilia small-pet owners
- Book the appointment for a calm time of day, preferably with a vet used to ferrets, guinea pigs or rabbits, and ask if they'll come to your home.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, so you can simply ask the vet to take your pet afterwards, or bring a lined box to take them home.
- Bring the bonded companion along where that's realistic; otherwise, arrange for them to spend time with the body once you're back.
- Ask for a paw or foot print at the appointment. Many vets will make one for you.
- Confirm private or communal on paper, and find out the date you can expect to pick up the ashes.
- If you plan a garden burial after euthanasia, go deep and cover the spot with a paving slab. The euthanasia drug remains in your pet's body and could harm any wildlife that digs there.
Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret
Brasilia was planned around cars, with wide axes, residential superblocks of apartment buildings on stilts and satellite towns spread across the Federal District. That layout matters when a pet dies: distances are long, and many families in the superblocks have no garden for a home burial. When you ask for options, say whether you live in the Plano Piloto or a satellite city, and whether your building has a lift, so any collection can be planned properly.

Questions people ask
How do Brazil attitudes to cremation compare?
Exame, citing Sincep (2024) puts the Brazil human cremation rate at about 9%[1]. We show it on the Brasilia page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[7] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
What if my rabbit dies at night in Brasilia?
There's no need to go anywhere tonight. Wrap your rabbit in a towel, place them in a box and keep them somewhere cool, in a sealed bag in the fridge if it's warm. Let a bonded partner spend some time with the body. In the morning, call your vet or a crematorium. If you're worried the death was infectious, keep other rabbits away from the bedding until you've spoken to a vet.
Can two bonded rabbits be cremated together in Brasilia?
Yes, if you ask for a joint cremation. Their ashes are mixed and returned in one container, which many families find comforting. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined or buried together. Put the request in writing, because the default is to keep every pet separate.
Is there a vet in Brasilia who really knows rabbits and guinea pigs?
Most cities this size have at least one practice with exotics experience, but ask the right question: whether the vet regularly treats rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets or chinchillas, not just whether they'll see them. For end-of-life care, experience matters. Sedating a small, frightened animal calmly takes practice, and an experienced vet will also know which crematorium handles small pets well.
How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?
Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[8] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
