In British Columbia, about 87%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates anywhere. That familiarity shows in the questions small-pet owners ask: less about whether, more about whether they'll really get ashes back from something so tiny. They will, from a genuine private cremation. A rabbit returns a few tablespoons of bone ash, enough for a keepsake urn or to share a pinch between two children.

What the rules in British Columbia mean for a rabbit or ferret
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. Where British Columbia and your local council, city or county may have a say is burial: depth, distance from wells and streams, and whether renters can bury at all. Landlords and homeowners' associations can add their own conditions, so check your lease or HOA guidelines too.
In Canada, exotic-experienced vets are concentrated in larger cities, so rural families may travel for a rabbit's or ferret's end-of-life care. Most provinces allow burial on your own land, but frozen ground rules it out for much of the winter. RHDV2 has been found in parts of Canada, including British Columbia, so mention any sudden rabbit death to your vet before burial.

A rabbit returns more, around 74 g[8]. Ask the provider how they keep very small pets separate, because the real risk isn't losing everything but mixing with other remains.
Can a ferret be cremated with its hammock or toys?
Often, but ask first. Natural fabrics and paper usually go in; plastic, metal buckles, bells and synthetic fleece may need to be removed. Many families put in a sock the ferret stole or a short note, and keep the harness and hammock at home. If something has to come out, ask the provider to return it with the ashes.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[9] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
