Cremation is routine for people in Canada, at about 81.1%[1], and that familiarity sometimes pushes families toward private cremation without much thought. Communal cremation is a perfectly caring choice for a small pet, especially if you'd have scattered the ashes anyway or already have a garden memorial for earlier pets. The one thing to settle before you choose is whether you'd like anything back.

What the rules in Nova Scotia mean for a rabbit or ferret
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body. Since 2003, US labels for euthanasia drugs have carried a warning that euthanized animals must be disposed of so that scavenging wildlife can't eat them[8]. That's why vets in Nova Scotia and elsewhere often suggest cremation after euthanasia, or a well-protected grave with a heavy slab over it.
In Canada, exotic-experienced vets are concentrated in larger cities, so rural families may travel for a rabbit's or ferret's end-of-life care. Most provinces allow burial on your own land, but frozen ground rules it out for much of the winter. RHDV2 has been found in parts of Canada, including British Columbia, so mention any sudden rabbit death to your vet before burial.

- Tell the children simply and honestly. Say their pet died; gone to sleep sounds gentler but can leave a small child scared.

Is cremation common in Canada?
For people, yes: about 81.1%[1] of Canada deaths end in cremation, according to CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Halifax follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I drop my rabbit off at the crematorium myself?
Usually, yes, and for a small pet it's often the simplest option. Call ahead so they expect you, bring your pet wrapped in a towel in a sturdy box, and keep the car cool. Dropping off yourself often avoids a collection fee and lets you see where your pet will be cared for. Some crematoria near Halifax will even let you wait.
Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Halifax?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[9], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
How long does it take to get small pet ashes back in Halifax?
Many families receive private cremation ashes in about 5-10 days[10], sometimes sooner if you drop your pet off yourself. Where the crematorium collects from vets only once or twice a week, it can take longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether you can collect in person rather than waiting for the vet's next delivery.
