Beijing, China
What families in Beijing usually arrange
Pet ownership has grown fast in Beijing, and so has pet aftercare, with private cremation and small farewell rooms now familiar options. Ask whether a private cremation lets you watch or collect the remains yourself, and how long it takes to receive them. Many families keep the ashes at home at first and later mark the loss at Qingming, the spring festival for remembering the dead.
Most Beijing families live in high-rise compounds inside or near the ring roads, with some still in older courtyard lanes, and few have a garden. Home burial is rarely possible, so cremation is the usual choice. When you ask for options, give your district and compound, and say whether guards or gate rules affect vehicle access, because collection often depends on getting a car inside the compound.
Apartment and condo rules in Beijing often forbid burying anything in shared courtyards or landscaped beds, even a hamster. That catches some families out when a child wants a grave. A good middle path is private cremation followed by a balcony planter: bury the small container of ashes in a deep pot and grow something your pet liked, such as parsley, dandelion or basil. It stays with you if you move.
With roughly 21,540,000 residents, Beijing is one of the China communities we cover.

What the local cremation rate tells you
In China, about 50%[1] of people are cremated, and burial still has plenty of supporters. That mix gives small-pet owners real options, including pet cemeteries that accept rabbits and guinea pigs alongside cats and dogs. A cemetery plot costs more than a garden grave, but it suits families who rent, expect to move or want somewhere that will be tended.

Beijing weather and your small pet
However you're travelling in or around Beijing, a small pet's body travels best lying flat in a lidded box, wedged so it can't slide. Put the box on the floor of the car or strap it in with a seatbelt, keep the car at a comfortable temperature and take the most direct route. If you're walking or using transit, a sturdy shopping bag around the box keeps things discreet.

What rabbit and guinea pig cremation costs in Beijing
In Beijing, a small pet's cremation is often sold as a package with a short farewell, a simple urn and sometimes a columbarium niche. For a rabbit or guinea pig, the ceremony can cost more than the cremation itself, so ask exactly what's included, and whether a basic individual cremation is available on its own if that's all you want.

Burial, ashes and paperwork in China
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[6], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[7]. Whatever applies in China, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
A checklist for Beijing small-pet owners
- Put on gloves before touching a rabbit that died without warning or had blood around the mouth or nose. Hands, clothing and bedding can all carry RHDV2.
- Place your rabbit in a sealed bag, then a box with a lid, and make sure the other rabbits stay well clear of both body and hutch.
- Phone your vet before burying or disposing of anything. In the US, federal advice is to consult a vet or animal health official first.
- Bag the hay, bedding and litter and keep it apart until your vet tells you how to dispose of it.
- Scrub the enclosure, dishes and water bottle with a disinfectant your vet recommends, then let everything dry fully.
- Ask about testing and vaccination for the rabbits that remain. Until you have answers, cremating the body is generally the safer option.
Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret
Beijing has long, hot summers and cold, dry winters, with spring dust and winter smog on some days. In summer heat, a pet's body needs cooling within hours: wrap it in a towel with ice packs near the belly and back, and keep the room air-conditioned. In winter there's more time, but heating in apartments is strong, so find the coolest room and don't delay decisions for too long.

Questions people ask
How do China attitudes to cremation compare?
Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019) puts the China human cremation rate at about 50%[1]. We show it on the Beijing page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
Can I drop my rabbit off at the crematorium myself?
Usually, yes, and for a small pet it's often the simplest option. Call ahead so they expect you, bring your pet wrapped in a towel in a sturdy box, and keep the car cool. Dropping off yourself often avoids a collection fee and lets you see where your pet will be cared for. Some crematoria near Beijing will even let you wait.
Will I actually get ashes back from my guinea pig?
Yes, from a genuine private cremation. Ash is mostly processed bone, and a median-weight guinea pig returns about 37 g[8] by our estimate, a couple of tablespoons. A rabbit returns more, around 74 g[5]. Ask the provider how they keep very small pets separate, because the real risk isn't losing everything but mixing with other remains.
Can a ferret be cremated with its hammock or toys?
Often, but ask first. Natural fabrics and paper usually go in; plastic, metal buckles, bells and synthetic fleece may need to be removed. Many families put in a sock the ferret stole or a short note, and keep the harness and hammock at home. If something has to come out, ask the provider to return it with the ashes.
How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?
Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[9] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
