What families in Bordeaux usually arrange
French vets commonly organize pet cremation, and the choice in Bordeaux usually comes down to individual cremation, which returns your pet's ashes, or collective cremation, which costs less and returns nothing. Say which you want clearly, since the vet may ask soon after a death. Request the price in writing and find out when you can collect the urn. Most vets will also explain the options plainly if asked.
Bordeaux has an oceanic climate, with mild, wet winters and summers that are usually warm but can bring intense heatwaves, as in 2022 when wildfires burned large areas of the Gironde forest. On a hot day, close the shutters, set your pet on a towel on the coolest tiled floor, keep wrapped cold packs against the body, and arrange collection or a vet visit within the day.
Some Bordeaux families only realize their rabbit was unwell after the fact: a quiet evening, no droppings, a pet found stretched out in the hutch next morning. If the death was sudden and you keep other rabbits, call your vet before burying. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease can travel on bedding, shoes and hands, and your vet will know whether it has turned up in the area recently.
With roughly 249,000 residents, Bordeaux is one of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine communities we cover.

What the local cremation rate tells you
Only about 44.91%[1] of people in France are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition, and for a small pet that usually means the garden. It's an easy, gentle choice for a rabbit or guinea pig that died naturally. Cremation is still available through most vets, and it's the better option if your pet was put to sleep, if you rent, or if the ground is too hard or wet to dig properly.
The France figure comes from ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons and small-pet aftercare in Bordeaux
A small body is simple to keep safely for a short while whatever the season. Lay your pet on a towel in a shoebox or carrier, add a little of their hay or fleece, and put the box somewhere cool, dark and away from other animals. If it will be more than a few hours before you reach a vet or crematorium in or near Bordeaux, a fridge or a cool box with wrapped ice packs is kind and entirely normal. Nobody at the clinic will think twice about it, and it gives the family time to gather.

Small pet cremation prices for Bordeaux
Europe has about 24.7 million[5] pet small mammals, so crematoria across France will handle a rabbit or guinea pig without surprise. In Bordeaux, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, but you can also go direct. Ask for individual and collective prices for your pet's weight, and whether the smallest animals are cremated on their own tray.

Local rules worth knowing in Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. Rules in Nouvelle-Aquitaine may differ, so check locally, but for a rabbit or guinea pig the real questions are usually ownership of the land and keeping scavengers out.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle for a rabbit (lapin) or guinea pig (cochon d'Inde); only individual cremation returns ashes. Animals under 40 kg may generally be buried on your own land, away from homes and water points; ask your mairie if you're unsure what applies locally.
What to do when your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Bordeaux
- Put on gloves before touching a rabbit that died without warning or had blood around the mouth or nose. Hands, clothing and bedding can all carry RHDV2.
- Place your rabbit in a sealed bag, then a box with a lid, and make sure the other rabbits stay well clear of both body and hutch.
- Phone your vet before burying or disposing of anything. US federal guidance says to speak with a vet or an animal health official before you act.
- Bag the hay, bedding and litter and keep it apart until your vet tells you how to dispose of it.
- Scrub the enclosure, dishes and water bottle using whichever disinfectant your vet suggests, and allow it all to dry out completely.
- Ask about testing and vaccination for the rabbits that remain. Until you have answers, cremating the body is generally the safer option.
Keeping a small companion close
Bordeaux mixes tall eighteenth-century limestone apartment buildings in the center with streets of échoppes, the single-story terraced houses with small back gardens found in districts like Saint-Augustin and Caudéran. The tram network covers much of the city and many residents live without a car. If your pet dies at home, tell your vet or provider whether you can travel and whether you need someone to collect.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in France?
For people, yes: about 44.91%[1] of France deaths end in cremation, according to ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bordeaux follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is private cremation worth it for a guinea pig?
It is if you want the ashes back to keep, scatter or bury later, particularly if you might move house. If a garden grave or communal cremation feels right, there's no need to pay more. A guinea pig's size doesn't make either choice less meaningful; what matters is what you'll be glad of a year from now.
Do guinea pigs grieve when their cage mate dies?
Many do. A guinea pig that has lost its companion may go quiet, stop wheeking at feeding time or eat less for a few days. Guinea pigs are herd animals, so a lone survivor usually needs company, either more time with you or, once it seems ready, a new companion introduced carefully. If the survivor stops eating altogether, call a vet promptly.
How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?
Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[7] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
