Pet crematoria tend to be plentiful in Germany, where roughly 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, and that usually means shorter waits. Some will cremate a rabbit or guinea pig within a day or two of drop-off and let you collect the ashes that same week. If timing matters to you, perhaps because a child is leaving for camp or a relative is visiting, ask for an expected return date before you choose.

Rules in Saxony treat a rabbit or ferret like any other pet, which in practice means burial on land you own is usually fine and cremation is always allowed. The extra care small pets need is practical rather than legal: bury deep enough to stop foxes and dogs digging, keep away from vegetable beds, and never put a pet that was euthanized in a shallow grave.
In Germany, you can bury a small pet on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas, and many families do exactly that for a rabbit or guinea pig. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer Einzeleinäscherung (individual, ashes returned) and Sammeleinäscherung (collective); ask which one you're booking and whether small animals have their own tray.
Step by step in Leipzig
- Make sure your pet has really died. A cold room can send a hamster or pygmy hedgehog into a torpor that is easy to mistake for death.
- Warm them gently for 30 minutes, cupped in your palms or held against your chest, and look closely for slow breathing or small movements.

- Once you're certain, wrap your pet in soft cloth or tissue and lay them in something small, like a tea box or the box from a piece of jewelry.

Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
