Finding the right help for a small pet in Delhi
Hindu tradition makes cremation the norm for people in India, around 80% of deaths, so many Delhi families find pet cremation feels natural. Pet ownership has grown quickly in the city, and so has aftercare. Ask whether a private cremation lets you be present, how the ashes are returned, and how long it takes. Some families choose to immerse ashes in a river, as they would for a relative.
Delhi's summers are among the hottest of any big city, often above 40°C in May and June, followed by the humid monsoon. In that heat, a pet's body needs cooling right away: wrap it in a towel with ice packs near the belly and back, and keep it in an air-conditioned room. Winters are cooler and often foggy, which can slow traffic, so allow extra time for collection.
Exotic-animal vets are easier to find in Delhi than in most places, and that matters at the end. A vet who sees rabbits and chinchillas regularly knows how to sedate a small, frightened animal gently, and many will visit at home so your pet isn't put through a car journey. Ask whether they also arrange cremation. Many do, and they tend to work with a crematorium that's used to small bodies and knows how to return a few tablespoons of ash safely.
Delhi's population is around 11,320,000.

How India thinks about cremation
Cremation is the default for people in India, at about 80%[1]. For small pets the picture is more mixed, because a guinea pig fits so easily into a garden grave. Many local families do both: they choose a private cremation, then bury the little tin of ashes under the rabbit's favorite bush. That keeps the garden ritual children often want, without the worry of foxes digging or leaving a grave behind when you move.
That India rate is a human one, published by Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014). We quote it for Delhi only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and timing in Delhi
However you're travelling in or around Delhi, a small pet's body travels best lying flat in a lidded box, wedged so it can't slide. Put the box on the floor of the car or strap it in with a seatbelt, keep the car at a comfortable temperature and take the most direct route. If you're walking or using transit, a sturdy shopping bag around the box keeps things discreet.

Small pet cremation prices for Delhi
In Singapore, one columbarium lists communal cremation for a pet under 5 kg at SGD 160 and private at SGD 280, with a niche from SGD 300 for the first year[5]. A rabbit or guinea pig fits those lightest bands. Around Delhi, the recurring cost of a niche can outweigh the cremation, so ask about renewal fees before choosing a place for the ashes.

Burial and scattering rules in India
Rules in India treat a rabbit or ferret like any other pet, which in practice means burial on land you own is usually fine and cremation is always allowed. The extra care small pets need is practical rather than legal: bury deep enough to stop foxes and dogs digging, keep away from vegetable beds, and never put a pet that was euthanized in a shallow grave.
The first day, step by step
- Note your pet's weight if you know it. Rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas all sit in the lightest price band, but it helps with quotes.
- Ring two providers that serve Delhi: your vet's crematorium and one independent. Ask how they handle very small pets.
- Decide who travels. For a pet this small, driving them in yourself is easy and often avoids a collection fee.
- Pack the box carefully: a towel, a little bedding, a sealed bag if it's warm, and a note with your name and your pet's name taped to the lid.
- Ask what can go with your pet. A letter, a hay ball or the sock your ferret loved are common choices, though the crematorium may need to take certain things out beforehand.
- Agree the total in writing, with the container included and a date for collecting the ashes.
- Plan for the ashes: a little urn, scattering them, or burying them beneath a shrub.
Keeping a small companion close
Delhi households range from flats in apartment societies and older colonies to large bungalows with gardens, and across the wider capital region many families live in gated high-rises in Gurugram and Noida. That affects aftercare: a garden burial may be possible in some homes, but in most flats cremation is the practical choice. When you ask for options, include your area, building access and whether a car can reach the door.

Questions people ask
Why does the Delhi page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014) reports about 80%[1] of India residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
Can a ferret be cremated with its hammock or toys?
Often, but ask first. Natural fabrics and paper usually go in; plastic, metal buckles, bells and synthetic fleece may need to be removed. Many families put in a sock the ferret stole or a short note, and keep the harness and hammock at home. If something has to come out, ask the provider to return it with the ashes.
What should I carry my small pet's body in?
A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Delhi?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[7], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
