Cremation is still a minority choice in Italy, at about 38.16%[1] for people, so relatives may be surprised if you choose it for a guinea pig or rabbit. You don't owe anyone an explanation, but a simple one helps: you'd like to keep them close, or you may not stay in this house forever. Most people accept that immediately, and some quietly ask you afterwards which provider you used.

Keeping a small body cool in Catania's climate
Chinchillas and degus handle humidity badly as well as heat, so in a close, muggy spell in Catania watch them as carefully as you would in a hot one. What Sicily allows for small pets
Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. Rules in Sicily may differ, so check locally, but for a rabbit or guinea pig the real questions are usually ownership of the land and keeping scavengers out.
The first day, step by step
- Put on gloves before touching a rabbit that died without warning or had blood around the mouth or nose. Hands, clothing and bedding can all carry RHDV2.
- Place your rabbit in a sealed bag inside a lidded box, and keep the other rabbits away from the body and the hutch.
- Phone your vet before burying or disposing of anything. In the US, federal advice is to consult a vet or animal health official first.
- Bag the hay, bedding and litter, then set the bags aside somewhere separate until the vet has told you how to get rid of them.
- Scrub the enclosure, dishes and water bottle with a disinfectant your vet recommends, then let everything dry fully.
- Ask about testing and vaccination for the rabbits that remain. Until you have answers, cremating the body is generally the safer option.
Keeping a small companion close
Catania's summers are long, hot and dry, and when the scirocco blows in from Africa the heat can climb sharply. In that weather a pet's body needs to be cooled quickly: wrap your pet in a cotton sheet, add frozen bottles or ice packs near the belly, and keep the room as cool and shaded as you can. In the mild winter months there's a little more time, but acting within a day is still wise.

Why does the Catania page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 38.16%[1] of Italy residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?
Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[8] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
How long does it take to get small pet ashes back in Catania?
Many families receive private cremation ashes in about 5-10 days[9], sometimes sooner if you drop your pet off yourself. Where the crematorium collects from vets only once or twice a week, it can take longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether you can collect in person rather than waiting for the vet's next delivery.
Is private cremation worth it for a guinea pig?
It is if you want the ashes back to keep, scatter or bury later, particularly if you might move house. If a garden grave or communal cremation feels right, there's no need to pay more. A guinea pig's size doesn't make either choice less meaningful; what matters is what you'll be glad of a year from now.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[10] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
