Why the Italy cremation rate matters here
Only about 38.16%[1] of people in Italy are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition, and for a small pet that usually means the garden. It's an easy, gentle choice for a rabbit or guinea pig that died naturally. Cremation is still available through most vets, and it's the better option if your pet was put to sleep, if you rent, or if the ground is too hard or wet to dig properly.

Keeping a small body cool in Florence's climate
A small body is simple to keep safely for a short while whatever the season. Lay your pet on a towel in a shoebox or carrier, add a little of their hay or fleece, and put the box somewhere cool, dark and away from other animals. If it will be more than a few hours before you reach a vet or crematorium in or near Florence, a fridge or a cool box with wrapped ice packs is kind and entirely normal. What the rules in Tuscany mean for a rabbit or ferret
For small mammals, the rules worth knowing in Tuscany cover three things: burying on your own property, scattering ashes, and what to do if a rabbit may have died of a disease such as RHDV2. The first two are straightforward. The third is a good reason to call your vet before a garden burial whenever a rabbit dies without warning.
A calm plan for the next 24 hours
- Note your pet's weight if you know it. Rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas all sit in the lightest price band, but it helps with quotes.
- Ring two providers that serve Florence: your vet's crematorium and one independent. Ask how they handle very small pets.
- Decide who travels. A rabbit or guinea pig fits in the car easily, and taking them yourself usually means no collection charge.
- Pack the box carefully: a towel, a little bedding, a sealed bag if it's warm, and a note with your name and your pet's name taped to the lid.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Florence?
Usually yes. Siena is about 31 miles away, Bologna is about 50 miles away and Portofino is about 108 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 38.16%[1] of Italy residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Could my rabbit's sudden death near Florence be a virus?
It could. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease, including the RHDV2 strain, is found in wild and pet rabbits in the UK, across much of Europe and in Australia and New Zealand, and it can kill a rabbit within hours. Vaccination is standard advice for that reason. If a rabbit dies without warning, talk to your vet before burying the body or cleaning the hutch, to protect your other rabbits.
What's the difference between individual and collective cremation?
Individual cremation means your rabbit or guinea pig is cremated alone and the ashes are returned to you. Collective (sometimes called communal or group) cremation means several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back. In Italy, vets usually offer both. Ask for the price of each for your pet's weight, and for written confirmation of which one you've chosen.
How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?
Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[7] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
