How Hiroshima families say goodbye to small pets
The river embankments, the parks around the Peace Memorial area and the green hills behind the city are part of daily life in Hiroshima, and many families' memories of a pet are tied to a sunny apartment balcony or a small garden near the water. Many families here choose individual cremation with the bones returned so they can keep them at home for a while. If you want to take part in gathering the bones, say so at the start.
Hiroshima is built on the delta where the Ota River splits into several channels before reaching the Seto Inland Sea, so much of the city is flat and crossed by bridges, with hillside neighbourhoods rising behind it. Many families live in apartments or tight houses close together. Home collection and a quiet cremation at which the family gathers the bones is the usual approach, and you can ask about both when you first get in touch.
Exotic-animal vets are easier to find in Hiroshima than in most places, and that matters at the end. A vet who sees rabbits and chinchillas regularly knows how to sedate a small, frightened animal gently, and many will visit at home so your pet isn't put through a car journey. Ask whether they also arrange cremation. Many do, and they tend to work with a crematorium that's used to small bodies and knows how to return a few tablespoons of ash safely.
About 1,194,000 people live in Hiroshima.
If you want to compare providers, look at Fukuoka (130 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Local funeral customs and a very small pet
Pet crematoria tend to be plentiful in Japan, where roughly 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, and that usually means shorter waits. Some will cremate a rabbit or guinea pig within a day or two of drop-off and let you collect the ashes that same week. If timing matters to you, perhaps because a child is leaving for camp or a relative is visiting, ask for an expected return date before you choose.
That Japan rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Hiroshima only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons and small-pet aftercare in Hiroshima
However you're travelling in or around Hiroshima, a small pet's body travels best lying flat in a lidded box, wedged so it can't slide. Put the box on the floor of the car or strap it in with a seatbelt, keep the car at a comfortable temperature and take the most direct route. If you're walking or using transit, a sturdy shopping bag around the box keeps things discreet.

How much Hiroshima families usually pay
Pet cremation across much of Asia is priced by weight, and small mammals sit in the lightest band. In Tokyo, one memorial park charges JPY 14,300 for communal and JPY 22,000 for individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg[5], while a Hong Kong provider lists individual cremation from HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[6]. Expect providers near Hiroshima to price in a similar way.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Japan: Japan costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Garden burial, disease and the rules in Japan
Rules in Japan treat a rabbit or ferret like any other pet, which in practice means burial on land you own is usually fine and cremation is always allowed. The extra care small pets need is practical rather than legal: bury deep enough to stop foxes and dogs digging, keep away from vegetable beds, and never put a pet that was euthanized in a shallow grave.
In Japan, rabbits, ferrets and chinchillas are welcomed at pet funeral halls and temples, often with a short ceremony. Communal and individual cremation for pets under 5 kg are both widely offered. Some municipal collection services cremate pets cheaply but don't return the ashes (返骨), so ask before you book if you'd like them home.
What to do when your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Hiroshima
- Ask to see your pet if the death happened at a Hiroshima clinic in your absence, perhaps during a dental under anaesthetic. Most practices are able to find you a quiet room.
- Ask what happened in plain terms, and whether anything could have been done. It's a fair question and a good vet will answer kindly.
- Decide whether to take your pet home, so you can bury them or say goodbye there, or whether the clinic should arrange the cremation instead.
- Take the bonded partner's needs into account. Where the remaining pet hasn't seen the body, it may be worth a short trip home before the cremation.
- Confirm the aftercare in writing before you leave, including private or communal and the expected date for the ashes.
- Ask for the bill to be itemized, with the cremation listed on its own line rather than folded into the treatment.
Remembering your small pet in Hiroshima
Hiroshima's summers are hot and humid, and the rainy season in early summer brings heavy downpours; the hillside districts have suffered serious landslides in recent years. If a pet dies during hot weather, keep the body cool with wrapped ice packs and arrange cremation quickly. In typhoon season, allow for delays in collection and ask the provider how storms affect their schedule.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hiroshima follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How much does small pet cremation cost in Hiroshima?
Small mammals fall in the lightest weight band on almost every price list, so they're among the least expensive pets to cremate. Published examples include individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg in Ireland and a median of AUD 412 for pets up to 5 kg in Australia. Ask any provider near Hiroshima for a written total in local currency, including collection and the container.
Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Hiroshima?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[8], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
What should I carry my small pet's body in?
A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
Is home collection available for small pets in Hiroshima?
Most larger providers in Hiroshima will collect from home, though for a small pet it isn't always worth the fee. Collection makes sense if you don't drive, have young children at home or live far from the crematorium. Ask the price upfront and whether they come out in the evening. In an apartment, a small pet can be carried down in a box without any special equipment.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
