In Japan, about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates anywhere. That familiarity shows in the questions small-pet owners ask: less about whether, more about whether they'll really get ashes back from something so tiny. They will, from a genuine private cremation. A rabbit returns a few tablespoons of bone ash, enough for a keepsake urn or to share a pinch between two children.

What Miyagi allows for small pets
In the US, the USDA asks rabbit owners not to dispose of a rabbit's body without first consulting a veterinarian or animal health officials, because of RHDV2. That advice sits alongside any rules in Miyagi. In practice it means one phone call to the practice before you dig, any time a rabbit dies suddenly or for no clear reason. Guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas can't catch this virus.
In Japan, rabbits, ferrets and chinchillas are welcomed at pet funeral halls and temples, often with a short ceremony. Communal and individual cremation for pets under 5 kg are both widely offered. Some municipal collection services cremate pets cheaply but don't return the ashes (返骨), so ask before you book if you'd like them home.
A calm plan for the next 24 hours
- Tell the children simply and honestly. Use the word died rather than gone to sleep, which can frighten younger children.
- Let them see and stroke their pet if they'd like, with the body tucked into a fleece or well-loved blanket.
- Give them a job: lining the box, drawing something, or picking a toy or handful of hay to send along with their pet.
- Keep your pet cool in a covered box in a cool room while the family decides together.
- Choose a goodbye the children can take part in. That might be burying their pet in the garden, or a little ceremony once a Sendai provider has returned the ashes.
- Keep an eye on the bonded survivor too. Checking that they're eating is a good job to share with the children.
Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret

Why does the Sendai page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[1] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I bury a small pet in a park or public space in Sendai?
Generally not. Many Asian cities don't allow pets to be buried in public places, and in dense cities home burial often isn't practical either. That's why cremation, sometimes with a columbarium niche, is the usual choice for rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets. Ask the provider whether the ashes are returned, because some low-cost collection services don't return them.
What should I carry my small pet's body in?
A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
Will I actually get ashes back from my guinea pig?
Yes, from a genuine private cremation. Ash is mostly processed bone, and a median-weight guinea pig returns about 37 g[7] by our estimate, a couple of tablespoons. A rabbit returns more, around 74 g[8]. Ask the provider how they keep very small pets separate, because the real risk isn't losing everything but mixing with other remains.
Is there a vet in Sendai who really knows rabbits and guinea pigs?
Most cities this size have at least one practice with exotics experience, but ask the right question: whether the vet regularly treats rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets or chinchillas, not just whether they'll see them. For end-of-life care, experience matters. Sedating a small, frightened animal calmly takes practice, and an experienced vet will also know which crematorium handles small pets well.
Can I drop my rabbit off at the crematorium myself?
Usually, yes, and for a small pet it's often the simplest option. Call ahead so they expect you, bring your pet wrapped in a towel in a sturdy box, and keep the car cool. Dropping off yourself often avoids a collection fee and lets you see where your pet will be cared for. Some crematoria near Sendai will even let you wait.
