Saying goodbye to a rabbit or guinea pig in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, North Holland

Caring for a small pet's body in Amsterdam

Amsterdam families spend time in the Vondelpark, the Amsterdamse Bos and along the IJ, but most pets in the city live in apartments and on houseboats, and many owners want the ashes back to keep at home. Individual cremation, where your pet is cremated alone and the ashes returned, is widely offered in the Netherlands. Ask for that in writing, since a collective cremation returns no ashes.

Amsterdam's maritime climate is mild and damp, with cool summers, grey winters and frequent wind and rain. That gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body in a cool room on a blanket and away from radiators. During summer heat waves, which the Netherlands now sees more often, arrange cremation within a day and ask about cool storage if a weekend gets in the way.

Plenty of people in Amsterdam don't own a car, and that's no barrier with a small pet. A rabbit or guinea pig in a closed, lined box can travel by taxi or rideshare without anyone knowing what's inside, and most drivers wouldn't mind if they did. If you'd rather not travel at all, ask the crematorium about collection from your door. Some charge less for a pet that one person can carry, so mention your pet's size when you phone.

With roughly 872,000 residents, Amsterdam is the largest of the 2 North Holland communities we cover.

The closest communities we cover are Haarlem (11 miles), Utrecht (21 miles) and The Hague (33 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Amsterdam too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

A small pet at home in Amsterdam

Local funeral customs and a very small pet

In Netherlands, about 68.37%[1] of people are cremated, and burial still has plenty of supporters. That mix gives small-pet owners real options, including pet cemeteries that accept rabbits and guinea pigs alongside cats and dogs. A cemetery plot costs more than a garden grave, but it suits families who rent, expect to move or want somewhere that will be tended.

For the Netherlands figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Amsterdam rather than as pet data.

Heat, cold and timing in Amsterdam

Local weather decides two things for small-pet owners in Amsterdam: how quickly you need to arrange cremation or burial, and whether the ground is easy to dig. Rabbits and chinchillas are far more sensitive to heat than to cold, so summer deaths are both more common and more urgent. If it's hot, keep the body chilled and ask your vet or crematorium to take your pet the same day. If it's cold, you have longer, but frozen or waterlogged soil may mean cremating first and burying the ashes later.

Small pet cremation prices for Amsterdam

Scandinavian providers show how extras add up. A Norwegian crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 and communal from NOK 1,190 for pets of 1 to 20 kg[5], and charges NOK 1,790 more for same-day return of ashes[6]. In Sweden, ashes normally take two to four weeks[7]. Near Amsterdam, ask whether speed costs extra before you pay for it.

What North Holland allows for small pets

Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. Rules in North Holland may differ, so check locally, but for a rabbit or guinea pig the real questions are usually ownership of the land and keeping scavengers out.

In the Netherlands, burying a small pet in your own garden is generally permitted, and many families do it for a rabbit or guinea pig. If you'd rather cremate, ask for individuele crematie to have the ashes returned. Some Dutch pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost, so check your policy if your rabbit was insured.

Step by step in Amsterdam

  1. Make sure your pet has really died. Hamsters and pygmy hedgehogs can go into a cold-induced torpor that looks like death.
  2. Warm them gently for 30 minutes, cupped in your palms or held against your chest, and look closely for slow breathing or small movements.
  3. Call a vet if you still can't tell. They hear this worry often and won't think it a silly question.
  4. Once you're certain, wrap your pet in soft cloth or tissue and lay them in something small, like a tea box or the box from a piece of jewelry.
  5. Keep the box somewhere cool while you decide between a garden burial, communal cremation or a private cremation in or near Amsterdam.
  6. Ask the crematorium how they handle the very smallest pets, and be direct about whether a hamster or hedgehog this small will leave any ash to return.

Small keepsakes for a small life

Amsterdam's narrow canal houses and apartment blocks come with the famously steep Dutch staircases, and many homes have no garden at all; some people live on houseboats. That makes burying a pet at home rarely possible and carrying a body down to the street hard, so home collection is what most owners ask for. When you book, mention the floor, whether there is a lift or a hoist beam, and whether a vehicle can stop on your canal street.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Netherlands?

For people, yes: about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Amsterdam follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Amsterdam?

Usually yes. Haarlem is about 11 miles away, Utrecht is about 21 miles away and The Hague is about 33 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Should my other rabbit see the body?

Many keepers find it helps. Letting the survivor sniff, groom or lie beside the body for a while often seems to reduce searching and restlessness afterwards. Give them 30 minutes to an hour somewhere quiet. Then watch closely: a grieving rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings can develop gut stasis within a day, which needs a vet quickly.

How much does small pet cremation cost in Amsterdam?

Small mammals fall in the lightest weight band on almost every price list, so they're among the least expensive pets to cremate. Published examples include individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg in Ireland and a median of AUD 412 for pets up to 5 kg in Australia. Ask any provider near Amsterdam for a written total in local currency, including collection and the container.

Can I bury my rabbit in the garden in North Holland?

In most places you can bury a pet on land you own, sometimes with local conditions attached. Check with your local council or county if you're unsure, and ask your landlord if you rent. Dig deep enough that foxes and dogs won't reach your pet, set a slab on top, take extra care if your rabbit was put to sleep, and call a vet first if the death was sudden, because of RHDV2.

Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Amsterdam?

Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[9], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
