Cremation for rabbits, ferrets and chinchillas in Rotterdam

Rotterdam, South Holland

How Rotterdam families say goodbye to small pets

Rotterdam's maritime climate is mild, wet and windy, with few hard freezes and summers that are warm rather than hot. A pet's body kept in a cool room stays stable overnight while you decide. During a summer heat wave, when top-floor flats warm up quickly, keep the body cool with ice packs and arrange collection sooner. Cold winter weeks give you the most time to decide.

Rotterdam is a city of apartments, from postwar blocks in Zuid and Kralingen to towers along the Maas at Kop van Zuid, and many residents cycle rather than drive. Steep, narrow Dutch staircases and scarce parking can make carrying a pet's body out of the building a real challenge. When you arrange pickup, mention the stairs, whether there is a lift and where a car can legally stop for a few minutes.

Big cities make it easy to rush. You can often get same-day collection in Rotterdam, but with a small pet there's seldom any need to pay for speed. A rabbit or guinea pig wrapped in a towel and kept cool will be fine overnight, and a calm morning drive to the vet or crematorium usually costs nothing extra. Save the urgent phone call for a heatwave, or for a sudden rabbit death that might be rabbit hemorrhagic disease.

Rotterdam is home to about 651,000 people, the largest of the 2 South Holland communities we cover.

The closest communities we cover are The Hague (13 miles), Utrecht (30 miles) and Haarlem (32 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Rotterdam too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Why the Netherlands cremation rate matters here

Cremation now accounts for about 68.37%[1] of human deaths in Netherlands, while burial keeps a loyal following. For small mammals, that split plays out in the back yard: plenty of families still dig a grave for a guinea pig, and plenty more ask for a private cremation so they can keep the ashes indoors. Vets here are used to both requests, so say plainly which one you'd like.

That Netherlands rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Rotterdam only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Cool, covered and safe: Rotterdam weather notes

A small body is simple to keep safely for a short while whatever the season. Lay your pet on a towel in a shoebox or carrier, add a little of their hay or fleece, and put the box somewhere cool, dark and away from other animals. If it will be more than a few hours before you reach a vet or crematorium in or near Rotterdam, a fridge or a cool box with wrapped ice packs is kind and entirely normal. Nobody at the clinic will think twice about it, and it gives the family time to gather.

How much Rotterdam families usually pay

Europe has about 24.7 million[5] pet small mammals, so crematoria across the Netherlands will handle a rabbit or guinea pig without surprise. In Rotterdam, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, but you can also go direct. Ask for individual and collective prices for your pet's weight, and whether the smallest animals are cremated on their own tray.

We keep the detailed South Holland price table on one page so it stays current: see South Holland prices.

Garden burial, disease and the rules in South Holland

Cremation needs no permit anywhere in South Holland; the rules that matter for small pets are about burial. A rabbit or guinea pig is easy to bury at home, so it's worth knowing the local limits first: whether you need to own the land, how far to stay from water, and whether a pet that was put to sleep needs a deeper grave.

In the Netherlands, burying a small pet in your own garden is generally permitted, and many families do it for a rabbit or guinea pig. If you'd rather cremate, ask for individuele crematie to have the ashes returned. Some Dutch pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost, so check your policy if your rabbit was insured.

Step by step in Rotterdam

  1. Talk to your vet about timing once your ferret's illness is no longer responding to treatment. Many families choose a day a little early rather than a little late.
  2. Book a home visit where a vet near Rotterdam offers them; otherwise choose a quiet appointment at the clinic. Find out if sedation comes first.
  3. Plan a good last day: a favorite treat, a nap in the hammock, time with the ferrets they share a cage with.
  4. Choose aftercare beforehand and let the vet know, so afterwards your ferret either goes with the practice or comes home with you, as planned.
  5. Take a print or clipping during the visit, before you have to part.
  6. Let cage mates see the body, then keep an eye on their appetite for the next few days.

Keeping a small companion close

Roughly two in three Dutch funerals are cremations, and pet cremation is well established. With most Rotterdam households living without a garden of their own, cremation is simply the practical route. Useful questions for a provider: is it an individual cremation, may you attend, is pickup included, and when will the ashes be back? Some Dutch providers offer a farewell room where the family can sit with the pet first.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Netherlands?

For people, yes: about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rotterdam follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Rotterdam?

Usually yes. The Hague is about 13 miles away, Utrecht is about 30 miles away and Haarlem is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

My rabbit was only four. Is that young?

Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[7] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.

Should my other rabbit see the body?

Many keepers find it helps. Letting the survivor sniff, groom or lie beside the body for a while often seems to reduce searching and restlessness afterwards. Give them 30 minutes to an hour somewhere quiet. Then watch closely: a grieving rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings can develop gut stasis within a day, which needs a vet quickly.

What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Rotterdam?

Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.

How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?

Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[8] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
