Small Pet Cremation in New Zealand: what to know
In New Zealand, most families arrange a rabbit's or guinea pig's cremation through their vet, but it's usually possible to contact a pet crematorium directly, and small pets are easy to bring in yourself. That can mean a lower price, more choice of container and a clearer picture of how very small animals are kept separate from larger ones.
Small-pet aftercare in New Zealand comes down to the same three choices as anywhere: a garden burial, a communal cremation or a private cremation with ashes returned. What differs is how vets and crematoria are organized, what they charge for a pet under a few kilos and which rules apply to burial. This page covers New Zealand as a whole; each city adds local detail.

What the local cremation rate tells you
About 69%[1] of people in New Zealand are cremated, and families often find the generations disagree about a pet. Grandparents may assume a rabbit goes in the garden; younger parents may want the ashes kept. If there's a gentle tug of war, remember you can do both: cremate privately and bury the container later in the garden, or keep half and bury half. A small pet's ashes divide easily.
The Spinoff, citing FDANZ 2023 Funeral Industry Trends Report (2023) publishes the New Zealand rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
What rabbit and guinea pig cremation costs in New Zealand
Listed prices differ widely between Australian states, from AUD 150 to 1,824 in New South Wales and AUD 199 to 749 in Victoria[2], mostly because of pet size and package extras. For a rabbit or guinea pig near New Zealand, ask for the smallest band only. RSPCA Queensland aims to return memorial packages within 14 days[3], a useful yardstick when a provider gives you a date.
About 3%[4] of Australian households keep small mammals such as rabbits or guinea pigs, so crematoria near New Zealand are used to them. The big price decision is individual versus communal: at one Auckland provider, individual cremation of a small pet costs more than five times the communal price. Ask whether a partitioned option exists in between, and how it's labeled.
| Place and weight | Individual | Communal |
|---|---|---|
| Australia (pets up to 5 kg) | AUD 412 median (range AUD 295 to 612) | From about AUD 80 |
| RSPCA Queensland memorial package | From AUD 250 | Not listed |
| Auckland (2 to 7 kg pet) | NZD 305 | NZD 55 |

What New Zealand allows for small pets
In the US, the USDA asks rabbit owners not to dispose of a rabbit's body without first consulting a veterinarian or animal health officials, because of RHDV2. That advice sits alongside any rules in New Zealand. In practice it means one phone call to the practice before you dig, any time a rabbit dies suddenly or for no clear reason. Guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas can't catch this virus.
In New Zealand, rabbit calicivirus strains have been released to control wild rabbits, so pet rabbits should be vaccinated and a sudden death mentioned to your vet. Ferrets can no longer be sold or bred as pets, but existing pet ferrets are cremated like any small pet. Councils set home-burial rules and many urban sections are small, so private cremation is common.
Step by step in New Zealand
- Make sure your pet has really died. Hamsters and pygmy hedgehogs can go into a cold-induced torpor that looks like death.
- Warm them gently for 30 minutes, cupped in your palms or held against your chest, and look closely for slow breathing or small movements.
- Call a vet if you still can't tell. They hear this worry often and won't think it a silly question.
- Once you're certain, wrap your pet in a tissue or soft cloth and place them in a small box, such as a jewelry or tea box.
- Keep the box somewhere cool until you've settled on burying them in the garden, communal cremation, or a private one from a provider in or around New Zealand.
- Ask the crematorium how they handle the very smallest pets, and whether any ash at all will come back from a pet this size.
Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret
Because a small pet leaves only a few tablespoons of ash, keepsakes work best when they're planned. Decide early whether anyone wants a pinch in a pendant or a tiny urn, before the rest is scattered or buried. The ashes sharing planner shows how far your pet's ashes will stretch between family members.

Questions people ask
How much does small pet cremation cost in New Zealand?
Small mammals sit in the lightest price band almost everywhere, so they're among the least expensive pets to cremate in New Zealand. Individual cremation returns ashes and costs noticeably more than communal. Ask for a written total in local currency that includes collection, the cremation and the container, and compare two providers if you can.
How dangerous is summer heat for rabbits in New Zealand?
More than most owners expect. Rabbits and chinchillas overheat far more easily than dogs or cats, and heatstroke is a common cause of sudden summer deaths. In the warmest parts of New Zealand, such as New Zealand where summer highs average about °F, keep small pets in the coolest room during hot spells, and if one dies, keep the body chilled until collection.
Is it easy to find an exotic vet in New Zealand?
It's easier in the big cities, including Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington, than in rural areas, and many small-pet owners in smaller towns travel for rabbit, chinchilla or ferret care. For euthanasia and aftercare any vet can help, but an exotics-experienced vet is more likely to sedate first and to know which crematorium handles small pets well.
Should I worry about rabbit viruses in New Zealand?
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease is present in wild rabbits across much of New Zealand, and vaccination is standard advice for pet rabbits. If a pet rabbit dies suddenly, keep other rabbits away from its bedding and speak to your vet before burial, so they can advise on testing and on cleaning the hutch.
Can I bury a rabbit or guinea pig at home in New Zealand?
Generally yes on land you own, though cities, councils and homeowners' associations may be stricter. Bury deep enough that foxes and dogs can't dig, and deeper still after euthanasia. If your rabbit died suddenly, speak to a vet first in case of rabbit hemorrhagic disease.
Can bonded pairs be cremated together in New Zealand?
Yes, most providers will carry out a joint cremation if you ask, so the ashes of two rabbits or guinea pigs are combined in one urn. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined. Put the request in writing, as the default is to keep pets separate.
