Caring for a small pet's body in Bergen
Bergen is built on steep hillsides between seven mountains and the fjord, and many homes are reached by narrow lanes, long flights of steps or streets too tight for a large vehicle. Wooden houses in older neighborhoods and apartments in the center are both common. If you'd like a pet collected from home, describe the stairs, the lane and where a car can stop, so collection can be planned properly.
Bergen is famous for rain, with wet weather much of the year, but its coastal climate is mild for its latitude, with cool summers and winters that often stay above freezing near sea level. That gives you a little more time than in hot climates. Still, wrap your pet's body, keep it in the coolest room and arrange collection within a day or two.
Looking a little beyond the city can help. Providers based near Vestland sometimes cover Bergen too, and a crematorium that regularly handles small animals may be worth a slightly longer drive. For a pet this light, a half-hour journey in a cool car is easy, and you'll have a chance to meet the people who'll care for your pet and see how they work.
With roughly 283,000 residents, Bergen is one of the Vestland communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Stavanger (99 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

How Norway thinks about cremation
With about 49.27%[1] of people cremated, Norway leans toward burial, and pet crematoria can be farther apart. That matters less for small pets than for dogs, because a rabbit or chinchilla is easy to carry to a crematorium in a box on the passenger seat. If you'd like a private cremation, ask your vet which provider they use and whether small pets go on a regular run or need dropping off.
The Norway figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Heat, cold and timing in Bergen
A small body is simple to keep safely for a short while whatever the season. Lay your pet on a towel in a shoebox or carrier, add a little of their hay or fleece, and put the box somewhere cool, dark and away from other animals. If it will be more than a few hours before you reach a vet or crematorium in or near Bergen, a fridge or a cool box with wrapped ice packs is kind and entirely normal. Nobody at the clinic will think twice about it, and it gives the family time to gather.

How much Bergen families usually pay
If burial appeals but you have no garden, Germany has around 120 pet cemeteries, with a grave costing about EUR 150 to 250[5], which is not far from an individual cremation. Dutch owners should also know that four insurers there offer some cremation cover[6], so read any policy you hold. Around Bergen, quote your pet's weight in kilos when asking for prices.

What the rules in Vestland mean for a rabbit or ferret
Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. Rules in Vestland may differ, so check locally, but for a rabbit or guinea pig the real questions are usually ownership of the land and keeping scavengers out.
What to do when your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Bergen
- Book the appointment for a calm time of day, ideally with a vet who sees rabbits, guinea pigs or ferrets. Ask whether a home visit is possible.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, so you can simply ask the vet to take your pet afterwards, or bring a lined box to take them home.
- Bring the bonded companion along where that's realistic; otherwise, arrange for them to spend time with the body once you're back.
- Ask for a paw or foot print while you're there. Plenty of practices are happy to do this.
- Confirm private or communal in writing, and ask when the ashes will be ready to collect.
- If you plan a garden burial after euthanasia, go deep and cover the spot with a paving slab. The euthanasia drug remains in your pet's body and could harm any wildlife that digs there.
Remembering your small pet in Bergen
Many Bergen families think of the mountains when they remember a pet: the trails on Fløyen above the city, the wide plateau of Vidden, or a quiet spot by the fjord. Scattering ashes on public or private land is something to check with the landowner first. Many families keep ashes at home, or bury them in their own garden, where a small stone can mark the place.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Norway?
For people, yes: about 49.27%[1] of Norway deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bergen follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?
Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[8] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Bergen?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[9], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
Can a ferret be cremated with its hammock or toys?
Often, but ask first. Natural fabrics and paper usually go in; plastic, metal buckles, bells and synthetic fleece may need to be removed. Many families put in a sock the ferret stole or a short note, and keep the harness and hammock at home. If something has to come out, ask the provider to return it with the ashes.
Can two bonded rabbits be cremated together in Bergen?
Yes, if you ask for a joint cremation. Their ashes are mixed and returned in one container, which many families find comforting. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined or buried together. Put the request in writing, because the default is to keep every pet separate.
