Small pet cremation in Lisbon

Lisbon, Portugal

Finding the right help for a small pet in Lisbon

Lisbon summers are hot and dry, and a heatwave can push temperatures well above 35°C, while winters are mild and wet. If your pet dies at home in summer, close the shutters, keep them in the coolest room on a towel and place cold packs near the body. In the cooler months, an unheated room usually gives you enough time to call your vet and let family say goodbye.

Lisbon is a city of hills, stairs and narrow streets, and many pets live in older apartment buildings in Alfama, Graça, Campo de Ourique or Arroios, often several floors up with no lift. When you ask about collection, say which floor you are on, whether the stairwell is narrow, and whether a car can stop outside. On steep lanes where parking is almost impossible, a provider may need to plan how to reach your door.

A city this size also brings choice about the goodbye itself. Some Lisbon providers have a quiet room where you can sit with your pet before the cremation, and a few offer a witnessed service even for very small animals. If you'd like the children there, or want to tuck a sprig of hay, a dandelion or a note in beside your pet, mention it when you book. Small requests like these are easy to honor when they're asked for early.

About 505,000 people live in Lisbon, which makes it the largest of the 2 Portugal communities we cover.

Families in Lisbon often end up using a provider from Cascais (15 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

6 million[1]

About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

4.3 years[2]

Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A small pet at home in Lisbon

Why the Portugal cremation rate matters here

Pet cremation has grown in most countries over the past two decades, and small mammals have been part of that shift. In Lisbon, you'll find vets who arrange it routinely and others who rarely see a rabbit. Asking your vet one direct question, which crematorium do you use for small pets and is it private, tells you most of what you need to know.

Cool, covered and safe: Lisbon weather notes

A small body is simple to keep safely for a short while whatever the season. Lay your pet on a towel in a shoebox or carrier, add a little of their hay or fleece, and put the box somewhere cool, dark and away from other animals. If it will be more than a few hours before you reach a vet or crematorium in or near Lisbon, a fridge or a cool box with wrapped ice packs is kind and entirely normal. Nobody at the clinic will think twice about it, and it gives the family time to gather.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Lisbon

Budgeting for a small pet's aftercare in Lisbon

If burial appeals but you have no garden, Germany has around 120 pet cemeteries, with a grave costing about EUR 150 to 250[4], which is not far from an individual cremation. Dutch owners should also know that four insurers there offer some cremation cover[5], so read any policy you hold. Around Lisbon, quote your pet's weight in kilos when asking for prices.

What Portugal allows for small pets

If your pet was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body. Since 2003, US labels for euthanasia drugs have carried a warning that euthanized animals must be disposed of so that scavenging wildlife can't eat them[7]. That's why vets in Portugal and elsewhere often suggest cremation after euthanasia, or a well-protected grave with a heavy slab over it.

A calm plan for the next 24 hours

  1. Talk to your vet about timing once your ferret's illness is no longer responding to treatment. Many families choose a day a little early rather than a little late.
  2. Book a home visit if one is available near Lisbon, or a quiet clinic slot. Ask whether the vet will sedate first.
  3. Plan a good last day: the treat they love most, a sleep in their hammock, and an hour or two alongside their cage mates.
  4. Choose aftercare beforehand and let the vet know, so afterwards your ferret either goes with the practice or comes home with you, as planned.
  5. Take a print or clipping during the visit, while you're still together.
  6. Let cage mates see the body, and over the days that follow watch how much they're eating.

Keeping a small companion close

Most aftercare in Lisbon is arranged in Portuguese, though many vets and providers are comfortable in English, which helps the city's large international community. Your vet is usually the first call: many practices can arrange cremation or explain the options. Ask whether the cremation is individual, so only your pet's ashes come back, or collective, and what is included in the price, such as collection and an urn.

Questions people ask

My rabbit was only four. Is that young?

Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[2] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[8] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.

How long does it take to get small pet ashes back in Lisbon?

Many families receive private cremation ashes in about 5-10 days[9], sometimes sooner if you drop your pet off yourself. Where the crematorium collects from vets only once or twice a week, it can take longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether you can collect in person rather than waiting for the vet's next delivery.

How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?

Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[10] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.

Do guinea pigs grieve when their cage mate dies?

Many do. A guinea pig that has lost its companion may go quiet, stop wheeking at feeding time or eat less for a few days. Guinea pigs are herd animals, so a lone survivor usually needs company, either more time with you or, once it seems ready, a new companion introduced carefully. If the survivor stops eating altogether, call a vet promptly.

Can I bury my rabbit in the garden in Portugal?

In most places you can bury a pet on land you own, sometimes with local conditions attached. Check with your local council or county if you're unsure, and ask your landlord if you rent. Dig deep enough that foxes and dogs won't reach your pet, set a slab on top, take extra care if your rabbit was put to sleep, and call a vet first if the death was sudden, because of RHDV2.

What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Lisbon?

Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.
