Gwangju, South Korea
What families in Gwangju usually arrange
Gwangju is the largest city in the Honam region, and most families here live in high-rise apartment complexes in districts such as Sangmu and Suwan, or in the newer estates on the city's edges. Licensed pet funeral facilities serving the city tend to sit out in the surrounding countryside of South Jeolla, so either a provider collects your pet or you drive there yourself. Ask how long the journey is, whether collection is included and whether you can attend.
Gwangju has hot, humid summers with a July monsoon, and cold winters when snow blowing in off the Yellow Sea can pile up across the Honam region more than in other southern cities. In the summer months, the air conditioner and a couple of frozen water bottles in a towel will keep your pet cool until the farewell; in winter a room without heating is usually enough. Allow extra travel time to an out-of-town facility on snowy or stormy days.
Plenty of people in Gwangju don't own a car, and that's no barrier with a small pet. A rabbit or guinea pig in a closed, lined box can travel by taxi or rideshare without anyone knowing what's inside, and most drivers wouldn't mind if they did. If you'd rather not travel at all, ask the crematorium about collection from your door. Some charge less for a pet that one person can carry, so mention your pet's size when you phone.
About 1,500,000 people live in Gwangju.
Families in Gwangju often end up using a provider from Daejeon (88 miles), Daegu (110 miles) and Busan (126 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

How South Korea thinks about cremation
When about 92.43%[1] of people in South Korea are cremated, many children have already seen a grandparent's urn on a mantelpiece, so a small urn for a guinea pig doesn't seem strange to them. Some families place the pet's container beside a relative's. Others prefer something the child can hold. There's no convention to follow, and a small box of ashes can move between rooms as feelings change.
We take the South Korea rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Gwangju, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Timing a small pet's aftercare around Gwangju's seasons
However you're travelling in or around Gwangju, a small pet's body travels best lying flat in a lidded box, wedged so it can't slide. Put the box on the floor of the car or strap it in with a seatbelt, keep the car at a comfortable temperature and take the most direct route. If you're walking or using transit, a sturdy shopping bag around the box keeps things discreet.

Where the money goes: small pet aftercare in Gwangju
Japan shows how wide the choice can be. A funeral hall package for a 1 to 5 kg pet costs about JPY 60,000[5], while a Tokyo memorial park's communal cremation for a small pet costs about 4.8 times[6] the ward's collection fee, by our estimate. Around Gwangju, decide first whether you want ashes back and a ceremony, then compare like with like.

Burial and scattering rules in South Korea
Burying a small pet on land you don't own is where most families run into trouble. Shared gardens, allotments, community gardens, parks and a relative's yard all need the owner's permission, and many public spaces in South Korea don't allow burial at all. If there's any doubt, cremate and keep the ashes, then bury them later somewhere that's genuinely yours, or somewhere the owner has happily agreed.
The first day, step by step
- Ask your pet sitter to call you first, and not to touch anything until they have, should your pet die while you're out of Gwangju.
- Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around the body, a lid on the box, and the coldest room they can find.
- Ask your vet to hold your pet in cold storage until you get back. A few days is no trouble for most practices.
- Make sure the survivor is being watched for eating and droppings, and give the sitter your vet's number.
- Decide on aftercare when you're back and able to think. There's no need to choose from a hotel room.
- Say goodbye at the clinic if that would help, ahead of the burial or cremation taking place.
Keeping a small companion close
Many Gwangju families have roots in rural Jeolla, and it can be tempting to think of burying a pet on a relative's land or a quiet hillside. Korean rules do not treat that as an allowed option, and burial in parks or public ground is not permitted either. The usual routes are cremation at a licensed pet funeral facility or aftercare arranged through your vet. If you want your own pet's ashes back, ask for an individual cremation.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in South Korea?
For people, yes: about 92.43%[1] of South Korea deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Gwangju follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Gwangju?
The closest communities we cover are Daejeon (about 88 miles), Daegu (about 110 miles) and Busan (about 126 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Gwangju too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Gwangju?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[8], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[9] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
