Incheon, South Korea
What families in Incheon usually arrange
Incheon's coastal climate brings humid summers, heavy monsoon rains and cold winter winds off the Yellow Sea. In summer, cool your pet's body quickly with a towel and ice packs in an air-conditioned room, away from sunny windows. In winter a cool room away from floor heating buys a little time, but arranging cremation within a day or two is normal here and makes the waiting easier on everyone.
Incheon mixes older neighborhoods around the port with newer high-rise districts like Songdo and Cheongna, and most pets live in apartment complexes. As in the rest of Korea, burying a pet in parks, hills or apartment grounds isn't allowed, so licensed cremation is the usual path. Collection from your building helps if you don't drive. Share your district when you ask for options.
Big cities make it easy to rush. You can often get same-day collection in Incheon, but with a small pet there's seldom any need to pay for speed. A rabbit or guinea pig wrapped in a towel and kept cool will be fine overnight, and a calm morning drive to the vet or crematorium usually costs nothing extra. Save the urgent phone call for a heatwave, or for a sudden rabbit death that might be rabbit hemorrhagic disease.
Incheon's population is around 2,954,000.
Our pages for Seoul (17 miles, a larger centre), Gangnam (18 miles) and Daejeon (85 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Incheon as well.

How South Korea thinks about cremation
About 92.43%[1] of people in South Korea are cremated, so cremation is familiar, but it's still worth reading a price list closely. The terms individual, private and partitioned mean different things at different providers. For a rabbit or ferret, ask whether your pet will be alone in the chamber, or in a separate section alongside others. Both are sold as ashes-returned services, but only one is genuinely individual.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the South Korea figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Incheon tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Cool, covered and safe: Incheon weather notes
However you're travelling in or around Incheon, a small pet's body travels best lying flat in a lidded box, wedged so it can't slide. Put the box on the floor of the car or strap it in with a seatbelt, keep the car at a comfortable temperature and take the most direct route. If you're walking or using transit, a sturdy shopping bag around the box keeps things discreet.

Budgeting for a small pet's aftercare in Incheon
Some cities in the region offer a municipal collection that costs little but doesn't return ashes. Tokyo's Shinjuku ward, for example, charges JPY 3,000 to collect a pet, with no ashes returned[5]. If you'd like your rabbit's or ferret's ashes home, book a private provider in or near Incheon instead, and confirm in writing that the cremation is individual.

Local rules worth knowing in South Korea
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[7], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[8]. Whatever applies in South Korea, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
Your first few hours, in order
- Book the appointment for a calm time of day, preferably with a vet used to ferrets, guinea pigs or rabbits, and ask if they'll come to your home.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand. That way you either leave your pet with the vet without having to think, or you arrive with a box already lined and carry them home.
- Bring the bonded companion along where that's realistic; otherwise, arrange for them to spend time with the body once you're back.
- Ask for a paw or foot print at the appointment. Many vets will make one for you.
- Confirm private or communal in writing, and ask when the ashes will be ready to collect.
- If you plan a garden burial after euthanasia, dig well down and lay a slab over the grave, because the drug stays in the body and can harm wildlife.
Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret
Because Incheon is home to Korea's main international airport, many families here have pets that have traveled with them from abroad, or will travel with them when they move on. If you're planning to relocate overseas, cremation with ashes returned in a sealed, portable urn, plus a cremation certificate, makes the journey easier. Ask the provider for both before the cremation rather than afterward.

Questions people ask
How do South Korea attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the South Korea human cremation rate at about 92.43%[1]. We show it on the Incheon page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Incheon?
The closest communities we cover are Seoul (about 17 miles), Gangnam (about 18 miles) and Daejeon (about 85 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Incheon too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Incheon?
Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.
Can I drop my rabbit off at the crematorium myself?
Usually, yes, and for a small pet it's often the simplest option. Call ahead so they expect you, bring your pet wrapped in a towel in a sturdy box, and keep the car cool. Dropping off yourself often avoids a collection fee and lets you see where your pet will be cared for. Some crematoria near Incheon will even let you wait.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
Can two bonded rabbits be cremated together in Incheon?
Yes, if you ask for a joint cremation. Their ashes are mixed and returned in one container, which many families find comforting. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined or buried together. Put the request in writing, because the default is to keep every pet separate.
