Small Pet Cremation in Catalonia: what to know
Bonded pairs make small-pet loss different from losing a dog or cat. Rabbits and guinea pigs usually live in pairs or groups, so the practical steps include the survivor: time with the body, close watching for loss of appetite and sometimes a new companion. Our city pages cover the local side, from vets to crematoria, in 1 Catalonia communities.
Pet rabbits, cavies, ferrets and chinchillas live all over Catalonia, from city apartments to farmhouses, and the options when one dies are broadly the same everywhere. Cremation habits in Catalonia and your small pet
In Catalonia, about 50.11%[1] of people are cremated, and burial still has plenty of supporters. That mix gives small-pet owners real options, including pet cemeteries that accept rabbits and guinea pigs alongside cats and dogs. A cemetery plot costs more than a garden grave, but it suits families who rent, expect to move or want somewhere that will be tended.
We take the Catalonia percentage from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Catalonia
Few European crematoria publish a price just for rabbits, but many have a lowest weight band that covers them. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[2], and a German consumer guide lists collective cremation at EUR 85 to 205 and individual at EUR 165 to 375 across pet sizes[3]. Ask a provider near Catalonia for the price for a pet under 3 kg.
Europe has about 24.7 million[4] pet small mammals, so crematoria across Spain will handle a rabbit or guinea pig without surprise. In Catalonia, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, but you can also go direct. Ask for individual and collective prices for your pet's weight, and whether the smallest animals are cremated on their own tray.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (ashes returned) |

What the rules in Catalonia mean for a rabbit or ferret
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. Where Catalonia and your local council, city or county may have a say is burial: depth, distance from wells and streams, and whether renters can bury at all. Landlords and homeowners' associations can add their own conditions, so check your lease or HOA guidelines too.
The first day, step by step
- Check gently and take a moment. Small pets often go quietly at night. If in doubt, watch the chest and feel for a pulse, or ring the vet, who can confirm over the phone or in person.
- Let the bonded partner say goodbye. Leave the remaining pet with the body in a quiet spot for half an hour to an hour, then take them apart.
- Wrap your pet in a towel or fleece and place them in a shoebox or carrier. Keep the box somewhere cool; in warm weather, use a sealed bag and the fridge.
- Take a keepsake now if you want one. Snip a little fur, or press a foot into clay. Once the cremation has happened there's no second chance.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden, especially with a rabbit, so they can advise on RHDV2 before you bury anything or clean the hutch.
- Choose burial or cremation. If cremating, ask a provider serving Catalonia for private cremation confirmed in writing.
- Watch the survivor for the next few days: eating, drinking and droppings.
Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret
Remembering a small pet is often a family project. A photo album of your guinea pigs' best moments, a note on the calendar for the day they came home, a walk somewhere in Catalonia where wild rabbits graze at dusk: all are gentle ways to keep the memory. Children especially benefit from something they can come back to.

Questions people ask
Should I worry about rabbit viruses in Catalonia?
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease is present in wild rabbits across much of Catalonia, and vaccination is standard advice for pet rabbits. If a pet rabbit dies suddenly, keep other rabbits away from its bedding and speak to your vet before burial, so they can advise on testing and on cleaning the hutch.
Do winters in Catalonia affect burying a small pet?
In the colder parts of Catalonia, frozen ground can make a safe-depth grave impossible for weeks or months. Many families keep a small pet in a sealed box somewhere cold for a few days, or cremate and bury the ashes in spring. In Catalonia, among the coldest places we cover, average winter lows reach about °F.
Is cremation common for small pets in Catalonia?
For people, cremation accounts for 50.11%[1] of deaths in Catalonia, and pet aftercare loosely follows local habits. For small mammals, garden burial is still very common because a rabbit or guinea pig is so easy to bury. Private cremation is chosen most by renters, apartment dwellers and families who'd like to keep the ashes.
Can bonded pairs be cremated together in Catalonia?
Yes, most providers will carry out a joint cremation if you ask, so the ashes of two rabbits or guinea pigs are combined in one urn. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined. Put the request in writing, as the default is to keep pets separate.
How long does it take to get a rabbit's ashes back in Catalonia?
Often one to two weeks. In large cities it can be quicker, especially if you drop your pet off yourself. In rural areas, where crematoria collect from vets on set days, it may take longer. Ask for an expected date and whether you can collect the ashes in person.
How dangerous is summer heat for rabbits in Catalonia?
More than most owners expect. Rabbits and chinchillas overheat far more easily than dogs or cats, and heatstroke is a common cause of sudden summer deaths. In the warmest parts of Catalonia, such as Catalonia where summer highs average about °F, keep small pets in the coolest room during hot spells, and if one dies, keep the body chilled until collection.
