Small-pet aftercare has moved in the same direction, only more slowly, because a rabbit or guinea pig is so easy to bury at home. Expect to meet both habits among friends and neighbors. For small mammals, the rules worth knowing in Valencia cover three things: burying on your own property, scattering ashes, and what to do if a rabbit may have died of a disease such as RHDV2. The first two are straightforward. The third is a good reason to call your vet before a garden burial whenever a rabbit dies without warning.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Alicante?
Usually yes. Murcia is about 43 miles away and Valencia is about 78 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Alicante page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a ferret be cremated with its hammock or toys?
Often, but ask first. Natural fabrics and paper usually go in; plastic, metal buckles, bells and synthetic fleece may need to be removed. Many families put in a sock the ferret stole or a short note, and keep the harness and hammock at home. If something has to come out, ask the provider to return it with the ashes.
What's the difference between individual and collective cremation?
Individual cremation means your rabbit or guinea pig is cremated alone and the ashes are returned to you. Collective (sometimes called communal or group) cremation means several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back. In Spain, vets usually offer both. Ask for the price of each for your pet's weight, and for written confirmation of which one you've chosen.
How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?
Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[8] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Alicante?
Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.
