Caring for a small pet's body in Stockholm
Stockholm families make the most of Djurgården, the waterfront paths and the forests at the edge of the city, and many spend summers in the archipelago. Pets are often part of all of it, from the summer cottage to a sunny balcony in town. Many owners here ask for individual cremation so the ashes can come home or go to a place that mattered. Confirm the type of cremation in writing.
Stockholm is built across islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, and most people in the inner city live in apartment buildings, often without a lift in the older blocks of Södermalm and Vasastan. Burying a pet at home is rarely an option here, so home collection and cremation is the usual choice. Mention stairs, entry codes and parking when you get in touch, since these affect how collection works.
Exotic-animal vets are easier to find in Stockholm than in most places, and that matters at the end. A vet who sees rabbits and chinchillas regularly knows how to sedate a small, frightened animal gently, and many will visit at home so your pet isn't put through a car journey. Ask whether they also arrange cremation. Many do, and they tend to work with a crematorium that's used to small bodies and knows how to return a few tablespoons of ash safely.

How Sweden thinks about cremation
When about 84.69%[1] of people in Sweden are cremated, many children have already seen a grandparent's urn on a mantelpiece, so a small urn for a guinea pig doesn't seem strange to them. Some families place the pet's container beside a relative's. Others prefer something the child can hold. There's no convention to follow, and a small box of ashes can move between rooms as feelings change.
For the Sweden figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Stockholm rather than as pet data.
Heat, cold and timing in Stockholm
Local weather decides two things for small-pet owners in Stockholm: how quickly you need to arrange cremation or burial, and whether the ground is easy to dig. Rabbits and chinchillas are far more sensitive to heat than to cold, so summer deaths are both more common and more urgent. If it's hot, keep the body chilled and ask your vet or crematorium to take your pet the same day. If it's cold, you have longer, but frozen or waterlogged soil may mean cremating first and burying the ashes later.

What rabbit and guinea pig cremation costs in Stockholm
Europe has about 24.7 million[5] pet small mammals, so crematoria across Sweden will handle a rabbit or guinea pig without surprise. In Stockholm, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, but you can also go direct. Ask for individual and collective prices for your pet's weight, and whether the smallest animals are cremated on their own tray.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Sweden: Sweden costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial and scattering rules in Sweden
Rules in Sweden treat a rabbit or ferret like any other pet, which in practice means burial on land you own is usually fine and cremation is always allowed. The extra care small pets need is practical rather than legal: bury deep enough to stop foxes and dogs digging, keep away from vegetable beds, and never put a pet that was euthanized in a shallow grave.
The first day, step by step
- Talk to your vet about timing when treatment has stopped helping your ferret. Plenty of owners would rather go slightly too soon than leave it slightly too long.
- Book a home visit if one is available near Stockholm, or a quiet clinic slot. Ask whether the vet will sedate first.
- Plan a good last day: a favorite treat, a nap in the hammock, time with the ferrets they share a cage with.
- Choose aftercare beforehand and tell the vet, so your ferret can leave with them or stay with you as you've decided.
- Take a print or clipping during the visit, while you're still together.
- Let cage mates see the body, and over the days that follow watch how much they're eating.
Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret
Stockholm's winters are long and dark, with cold snaps and snow, while summers are short and light, with long evenings. In winter a cool room gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body away from radiators and on a blanket. Around midsummer and the July holiday weeks, when much of Sweden is on holiday, ask about timing and storage.

Questions people ask
How do Sweden attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Sweden human cremation rate at about 84.69%[1]. We show it on the Stockholm page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Stockholm?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[7], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Stockholm?
Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.
How long does it take to get small pet ashes back in Stockholm?
Many families receive private cremation ashes in about 5-10 days[8], sometimes sooner if you drop your pet off yourself. Where the crematorium collects from vets only once or twice a week, it can take longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether you can collect in person rather than waiting for the vet's next delivery.
Can a ferret be cremated with its hammock or toys?
Often, but ask first. Natural fabrics and paper usually go in; plastic, metal buckles, bells and synthetic fleece may need to be removed. Many families put in a sock the ferret stole or a short note, and keep the harness and hammock at home. If something has to come out, ask the provider to return it with the ashes.
