Basel is a compact city on the Rhine where most people live in apartments, many in older buildings without lifts, and plenty of households get around by tram, bike or on foot. Cremation habits in Switzerland and your small pet
About 90%[1] of people in Switzerland are cremated, so cremation feels ordinary here, and that carries over to pets. Families rarely feel they need to explain why they want a rabbit's ashes home. Crematoria are well established and used to small animals. Where cremation is this familiar, the useful question isn't whether to cremate but how: private or communal, and how your provider keeps a pet weighing a pound or two apart from much larger animals.

Basel weather and your small pet
Seasons shape small-pet aftercare more than people expect. Hot spells bring heatstroke and flystrike in rabbits; wet, cold spells are hard on outdoor guinea pigs and elderly rabbits. In Basel, ask your vet what they see most at this time of year, and whether they'd suggest changes for the survivors: moving a hutch into shade or indoors, adding extra bedding, or checking droppings daily while a bonded partner grieves. Local rules worth knowing in Basel-Stadt
Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. Rules in Basel-Stadt may differ, so check locally, but for a rabbit or guinea pig the real questions are usually ownership of the land and keeping scavengers out.
A checklist for Basel small-pet owners
- Tell the children simply and honestly. Use the word died rather than gone to sleep, which can frighten younger children.

Is cremation common in Switzerland?

Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Basel follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Basel?

Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Basel?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[7], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
