How Alaska thinks about cremation
About 74.1%[1] of people in Alaska are cremated, so cremation feels ordinary here, and that carries over to pets. Families rarely feel they need to explain why they want a rabbit's ashes home. Crematoria are well established and used to small animals. Where cremation is this familiar, the useful question isn't whether to cremate but how: private or communal, and how your provider keeps a pet weighing a pound or two apart from much larger animals.

Juneau weather and your small pet
Outdoor hutches are the thing to watch in a cold Juneau winter. Rabbits cope with cold better than heat, but wet, drafty hutches and old age are a hard combination, and guinea pigs feel the cold far more. If a pet dies outdoors in January, bring the body inside to a cool room, make sure the bonded partner is warm and eating, and think about moving the survivor indoors for a while.

Local rules worth knowing in Alaska
In the US, the USDA asks rabbit owners not to dispose of a rabbit's body without first consulting a veterinarian or animal health officials, because of RHDV2. That advice sits alongside any rules in Alaska. In practice it means one phone call to the practice before you dig, any time a rabbit dies suddenly or for no clear reason. Guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas can't catch this virus.

What to do when your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Juneau
- Check the whole group right away. When a chinchilla or guinea pig dies unexpectedly, the rest of the herd need a careful look for anything that seems off.
- Remove the body promptly after the others have had a short time with it, so they don't sit beside it for hours.
- Note the date, age and any symptoms somewhere you'll keep. Years of notes like this can show your vet a pattern across the herd.

My hedgehog is cold and still. Could it be hibernating?
It could. African pygmy hedgehogs kept below a comfortable room temperature can attempt hibernation, which can look alarmingly final: a chilly, floppy animal whose breaths are hard to see. Hold your hedgehog close under your shirt or wrapped in a warm fleece for half an hour, and call a vet. Hamsters can do something similar in a cold room. If there's no response after warming and a vet confirms death, aftercare can wait until you're ready.
What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Juneau?
Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.
How much does rabbit cremation cost in Juneau?
Most Juneau families pay roughly $100 to $175 for a private cremation of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret, and about $45 to $75 for a communal one where ashes aren't returned. Those are national ranges for pets up to 30 lb, and small mammals usually sit at the lower end. Home collection, an after-hours call and a decorative urn add to the total, so ask for a written quote.
Should my other rabbit see the body?
Many keepers find it helps. Letting the survivor sniff, groom or lie beside the body for a while often seems to reduce searching and restlessness afterwards. Give them 30 minutes to an hour somewhere quiet. Then watch closely: a grieving rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings can develop gut stasis within a day, which needs a vet quickly.
