If your pet dies at home in summer, bring them into the coolest air-conditioned room straight away and place cool packs wrapped in towels beneath them. Backyard burial is also harder than people expect, because much of the Valley sits on caliche, a cement-like layer of hardened soil that is tough to dig through.
The City of Phoenix lists dead-animal pickup among its solid-waste services, but that service is about removal. It is not described as private cremation, it does not say your pet is kept individually identified, and it does not mention returning ashes. If you want your pet's own ashes back, arrange a private or individual cremation through a vet or an aftercare provider rather than relying on the city pickup.
Plenty of Phoenix rabbits live indoors, in apartments with no yard at all, which takes home burial off the table for many families. Local funeral customs and a very small pet
Pet crematoria tend to be plentiful in Arizona, where roughly 80.7%[1] of people are cremated, and that usually means shorter waits. If it happens, bring your pet indoors, wrap them loosely in a towel and keep them in the coolest room while you make a plan.

Scattering rules rarely cause problems with a small pet, because a rabbit or guinea pig produces so little, rarely more than a small cupful and often much less. Private land with permission is fine almost everywhere. Parks, beaches and nature reserves in Arizona may have their own rules, so check before you go. Is cremation common in Arizona?

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Phoenix?

What is RHDV2 and why does it matter for rabbit aftercare?
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 kills 50-100%[7] of infected rabbits, often with no warning signs. It was first found in a US pet rabbit in 2018 and has since spread to wild rabbits across much of the West. The USDA asks owners to speak to a vet or animal health officials before disposing of a rabbit's body[8], because the virus survives in soil and on bedding.
How do I keep my other rabbits safe in a Phoenix heatwave?
Move hutches into deep shade or bring rabbits indoors to the coolest room. Frozen water bottles wrapped in a towel, a ceramic tile to lie on and lightly dampened ears all help. Avoid handling during the hottest hours. Chinchillas need even more care: keep them in a room below the mid 70s°F. Watch for panting, drooling or floppiness and call a vet at once if you see them.
Will I actually get ashes back from my guinea pig?
Yes, from a genuine private cremation. Ash is mostly processed bone, and a median-weight guinea pig returns about 37 g[9] by our estimate, a couple of tablespoons. A rabbit returns more, around 74 g[10]. Ask the provider how they keep very small pets separate, because the real risk isn't losing everything but mixing with other remains.
