Arvada, Colorado
Rabbit and guinea pig cremation around Arvada
Many Arvada families spend weekends in the mountains, and pets often come along on trips up I-70 or to trailheads in the foothills. Losing a pet can mean losing a companion on those outings. If you want the ashes returned, perhaps to take somewhere meaningful, ask for an individual cremation. Families who don't want ashes can choose communal cremation for less. Mention that plan when you make arrangements.
Arvada's winters are cold and snowy, with December lows around 17 degrees, but Front Range weather swings fast, and a sunny 60-degree day can follow a snowstorm. In the cold months, an unheated garage works as a safe resting place overnight, with your pet wrapped in a blanket. Summers are warm and dry, with July highs near 88, so arrange collection sooner then.
If your rabbit is eight or older, or your ferret is past six, it's worth a quiet phone call now while nothing is urgent. Ask your Arvada vet which crematorium they use, what a private cremation for a pet under five pounds costs, and whether they offer home visits. Write the answers down. Having them to hand makes the eventual day much less frantic, and nobody will think the question morbid.
Arvada's population is around 122,901, the 7th-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. Denver, roughly 7 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Arvada run from there.
Our pages for Wheat Ridge (2 miles), Westminster (4 miles) and Denver (7 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Arvada as well.

What the local cremation rate tells you
In Colorado, about 77.4%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates anywhere. That familiarity shows in the questions small-pet owners ask: less about whether, more about whether they'll really get ashes back from something so tiny. They will, from a genuine private cremation. A rabbit returns a few tablespoons of bone ash, enough for a keepsake urn or to share a pinch between two children.
That Colorado rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Arvada only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and timing in Arvada
Arvada winters bring average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, and that changes the options for a small pet. A rabbit or guinea pig that dies in winter can wait longer before burial or collection, kept in a cold garage or shed in a sealed box. But frozen ground may make a grave of proper depth impossible, and a shallow one invites scavengers who are hungry at that time of year.
Snow and ice can delay a crematorium's collection round, especially from outlying roads around Arvada. For a small pet that's less of a worry than for a dog: a sealed bag in a lidded box in an unheated garage or porch keeps them well for several days in this kind of cold. Just keep the box out of reach of cats, dogs, mice and anything else that finds its way into outbuildings.

Budgeting for a small pet's aftercare in Arvada
Pet insurance rarely helps with a small pet's aftercare. Standard policies typically don't cover cremation at all[5], and many rabbit and guinea pig owners have no policy. A few US insurers sell end-of-life add-ons; Figo's paid up to $250 toward cremation and burial[6]. If your ferret or rabbit is insured, check the small print before you book, then budget as if nothing will be reimbursed.

What the rules in Colorado mean for a rabbit or ferret
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body. Since 2003, US labels for euthanasia drugs have carried a warning that euthanized animals must be disposed of so that scavenging wildlife can't eat them[8]. That's why vets in Colorado and elsewhere often suggest cremation after euthanasia, or a well-protected grave with a heavy slab over it.
The official Colorado local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Arvada.
For Colorado's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Colorado guide. Local rules in Arvada can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
The first day, step by step
- Check gently and take a moment. Small pets often die quietly overnight. If you're unsure, look for breathing and a heartbeat; your vet can confirm by phone or in person.
- Let the bonded partner say goodbye. Put the survivor with the body for 30 minutes to an hour somewhere calm, then separate them.
- Wrap your pet in a towel or fleece and place them in a shoebox or carrier. Keep the box somewhere cool; in warm weather, use a sealed bag and the fridge.
- Take a keepsake now if you want one. Snip a little fur, or press a foot into clay. Once the cremation has happened there's no second chance.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden, especially with a rabbit, so they can advise on RHDV2 before you bury anything or clean the hutch.
- Choose burial or cremation. If cremating, ask a provider serving Arvada for private cremation confirmed in writing.
- Watch the survivor for the next few days: eating, drinking and droppings.
Keepsakes and memorials for small pets
Arvada stretches from Olde Town and older brick ranch neighborhoods near Wadsworth out to newer subdivisions climbing toward the foothills on the city's western edge. Fenced yards are the norm, and many families spend a last hour outside with their pet. If you need collection, mention your nearest cross streets, and in winter, whether your street or driveway has been plowed, since hills on the west side can ice over.

Questions people ask
Why does the Arvada page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 77.4%[1] of Colorado residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve Arvada actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Denver, about 7 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Arvada and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Arvada?
Usually yes. Wheat Ridge is about 2 miles away, Westminster is about 4 miles away and Denver is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Arvada's weather affect small pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Arvada, with average highs around 88°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Should my other rabbit see the body?
Many keepers find it helps. Letting the survivor sniff, groom or lie beside the body for a while often seems to reduce searching and restlessness afterwards. Give them 30 minutes to an hour somewhere quiet. Then watch closely: a grieving rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings can develop gut stasis within a day, which needs a vet quickly.
What should I carry my small pet's body in?
A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
