Castle Rock, Colorado
Finding the right help for a small pet in Castle Rock
At a little over 6,000 feet on the northern slope of the Palmer Divide, Castle Rock tends to catch more snow than Denver and can ice over when the metro only sees rain. A spring storm can make I-25 slow going for a day. If your pet dies during bad weather, keeping them wrapped in a blanket in the garage or a chilly basement overnight is reasonable. Summers are warm but rarely extreme.
The butte that gives Castle Rock its name watches over town, and every holiday season a lit star shines from its top. Many families here spend weekends on local trails and in the open space around the town, and some like the idea of remembering a pet somewhere with a view of the rock. Others keep ashes in an urn at home. Your choice can come later.
If the nearest crematorium is some distance from Castle Rock, ask how the ashes will come back. Many regional providers return them through your vet on the next delivery round, and some will send them by tracked post or courier in a padded box. A small pet's ashes weigh only a few ounces, so posting them is easy. Ask for a tracking number and a delivery date before agreeing.
With roughly 83,815 residents, Castle Rock is the 14th-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. Aurora, roughly 24 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Castle Rock run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Parker (10 miles), Centennial (15 miles) and Littleton (17 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Castle Rock routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

6 million[2]

3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in Colorado and your small pet
In Colorado, about 77.4%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates anywhere. That familiarity shows in the questions small-pet owners ask: less about whether, more about whether they'll really get ashes back from something so tiny. They will, from a genuine private cremation. A rabbit returns a few tablespoons of bone ash, enough for a keepsake urn or to share a pinch between two children.
The Colorado percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Castle Rock, not as a count of pets.
Heat, cold and timing in Castle Rock
Local weather decides two things for small-pet owners in Castle Rock: how quickly you need to arrange cremation or burial, and whether the ground is easy to dig. Rabbits and chinchillas are far more sensitive to heat than to cold, so summer deaths are both more common and more urgent. If it's hot, keep the body chilled and ask your vet or crematorium to take your pet the same day. If it's cold, you have longer, but frozen or waterlogged soil may mean cremating first and burying the ashes later.

Budgeting for a small pet's aftercare in Castle Rock
Why doesn't a two-pound rabbit cost a tenth of what a large dog does? Because much of the price is handling, paperwork and returning the ashes, not fuel. By our estimate, private cremation costs about $9 per pound for a 15 lb pet but nearer $4 per pound at 100 lb[5], so the smallest pets pay the most per pound. For Castle Rock families, the practical lesson is to compare total prices, not weight bands.

What the rules in Colorado mean for a rabbit or ferret
Cremation needs no permit anywhere in Colorado; the rules that matter for small pets are about burial. A rabbit or guinea pig is easy to bury at home, so it's worth knowing the local limits first: whether you need to own the land, how far to stay from water, and whether a pet that was put to sleep needs a deeper grave.

Step by step in Castle Rock
- Check gently and take a moment. Small pets often die quietly overnight. If you're unsure, look for breathing and a heartbeat; your vet can confirm by phone or in person.
- Let the bonded partner say goodbye. Put the survivor with the body for 30 minutes to an hour somewhere calm, then separate them.
- Wrap your pet in a towel or fleece and place them in a shoebox or carrier. Keep the box somewhere cool; in warm weather, use a sealed bag and the fridge.
- Take a keepsake now if you'd like one: a clipping of fur or a clay print of a foot. It can't be done after cremation.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden. With a rabbit in particular, they'll want to talk you through RHDV2 before the hutch is cleaned or anything goes into the ground.
- Choose burial or cremation. If cremating, ask a provider serving Castle Rock for private cremation confirmed in writing.
- Watch the survivor over the following days: are they eating, drinking, passing droppings?
Ways Castle Rock families remember rabbits and guinea pigs
Castle Rock, the Douglas County seat, has grown quickly into a town of more than 80,000, halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs on Interstate 25. Most households live in subdivisions spread over the hills, some of them gated or on winding streets that GPS handles badly. Aurora is about 24 miles north. When you arrange a home collection, give the subdivision name, the nearest main road and any gate instructions up front.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Colorado?
For people, yes: about 77.4%[1] of Colorado deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Castle Rock follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Aurora to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Aurora (roughly 24 miles from Castle Rock) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Castle Rock?
Usually yes. Parker is about 10 miles away, Centennial is about 15 miles away and Littleton is about 17 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Castle Rock?
Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
