Erie, Colorado
What families in Erie usually arrange
Erie began as a coal mining town in the 1870s and has grown into a suburb of about 41,000, straddling Boulder and Weld counties about 21 miles north of Denver. Housing ranges from small historic homes near Briggs Street to large newer subdivisions on the surrounding prairie. When arranging aftercare, give your subdivision name and nearest main road; many new streets are still unfamiliar to navigation apps.
Coal Creek runs through Erie, with trails linking the town to Lafayette and Louisville, and wide views stretch west to Longs Peak and the Flatirons. Families here often spend evenings outdoors, and some choose a memorial spot facing the peaks. Others keep the ashes indoors or bury them in the yard, well away from the sprinkler lines common in newer subdivisions. Nothing needs deciding in the first days.
Ashes for small pets from Erie can take a little longer to return, because the crematorium may collect from country vets only once or twice a week. That's normal. If a date matters, perhaps a birthday or a school holiday so the children can be there when the ashes come home, mention it when you book and ask whether you can collect them in person.
With roughly 40,904 residents, Erie is the 23rd-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Denver, about 21 miles (34 km) away, which is where some providers serving Erie are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Lafayette (5 miles), Frederick (6 miles) and Broomfield (6 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

The NFDA projected Colorado's cremation rate at 77.4% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial or cremation: the local habit
Cremation is routine for people in Colorado, at about 77.4%[1], and that familiarity sometimes pushes families toward private cremation without much thought. Communal cremation is a perfectly caring choice for a small pet, especially if you'd have scattered the ashes anyway or already have a garden memorial for earlier pets. The one thing to settle before you choose is whether you'd like anything back.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Colorado figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Erie tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Erie weather and your small pet
Cold snaps in Erie can cause confusion with the smallest pets. Hamsters and African pygmy hedgehogs kept in a chilly room in December can drop into a torpor that looks exactly like death: cold, limp and barely breathing. Before you assume the worst, warm your pet gently in your hands or against your body for 30 minutes, and call a vet. Once a pet has truly died, a cool, covered box is fine.
Erie winters bring average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, and that changes the options for a small pet. A rabbit or guinea pig that dies in winter can wait longer before burial or collection, kept in a cold garage or shed in a sealed box. But frozen ground may make a grave of proper depth impossible, and a shallow one invites scavengers who are hungry at that time of year.

Budgeting for a small pet's aftercare in Erie
Why doesn't a two-pound rabbit cost a tenth of what a large dog does? Because much of the price is handling, paperwork and returning the ashes, not fuel. By our estimate, private cremation costs about $9 per pound for a 15 lb pet but nearer $4 per pound at 100 lb[5], so the smallest pets pay the most per pound. For Erie families, the practical lesson is to compare total prices, not weight bands.

Burial, ashes and paperwork in Colorado
Rules in Colorado treat a rabbit or ferret like any other pet, which in practice means burial on land you own is usually fine and cremation is always allowed. The extra care small pets need is practical rather than legal: bury deep enough to stop foxes and dogs digging, keep away from vegetable beds, and never put a pet that was euthanized in a shallow grave.
Colorado keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Erie.
The rules that apply across Colorado (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Colorado page. Erie may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A checklist for Erie small-pet owners
- Put on gloves before touching a rabbit that died without warning or had blood around the mouth or nose. Hands, clothing and bedding can all carry RHDV2.
- Place your rabbit in a sealed bag inside a lidded box, and keep the other rabbits away from the body and the hutch.
- Phone your vet before burying or disposing of anything. US federal guidance says to speak with a vet or an animal health official before you act.
- Bag the hay, bedding and litter, then set the bags aside somewhere separate until the vet has told you how to get rid of them.
- Scrub the enclosure, dishes and water bottle with a disinfectant your vet recommends, then let everything dry fully.
- Ask about testing and vaccination for the survivors. Cremation is usually the safest choice for the body while you wait for answers.
Keeping a small companion close
Erie's weather follows the northern Front Range pattern: dry summers topping out near 88, cold snaps in December and January, and gusty westerly winds that can rattle fences. Spring may bring heavy snow one week and warm sun the next. Following a death at home, rest your pet on bare tile or concrete away from windows, and let any storm pass before you head out on the roads.

Questions people ask
Why does the Erie page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 77.4%[1] of Colorado residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Erie climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 88°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Where are the providers that serve Erie actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Denver, about 21 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Erie and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Erie?
The closest communities we cover are Lafayette (about 5 miles), Frederick (about 6 miles) and Broomfield (about 6 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Erie too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How long does it take to get small pet ashes back in Erie?
Many families receive private cremation ashes in about 5-10 days[7], sometimes sooner if you drop your pet off yourself. Where the crematorium collects from vets only once or twice a week, it can take longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether you can collect in person rather than waiting for the vet's next delivery.
Can I bury my rabbit in the garden in Colorado?
In most places you can bury a pet on land you own, sometimes with local conditions attached. Check with your local council or county if you're unsure, and ask your landlord if you rent. Dig deep enough that foxes and dogs won't reach your pet, set a slab on top, take extra care if your rabbit was put to sleep, and call a vet first if the death was sudden, because of RHDV2.
