Saying goodbye to a rabbit or guinea pig in New London

New London, Connecticut

What families in New London usually arrange

Ocean Beach Park, the Thames waterfront and the Connecticut College Arboretum give New Londoners plenty of places to be outside, and ferries to Long Island, Block Island and Fishers Island leave from downtown. Some owners remember a pet by sitting near the harbor while the boats head out. Scattering ashes at sea has its own regulations, so look into them before planning a trip on the water.

New London packs about 28,000 people into a small, dense city at the mouth of the Thames River, with restored nineteenth-century houses on Starr Street, the columned mansions of Whale Oil Row, multi-family homes on the hills above the waterfront and apartments downtown. Cats, birds and other small pets are common in these homes. Parking and stairs change block by block, so describe your building when you ask a provider to collect.

Home burial is the most common goodbye for small pets in towns like New London, and with a little care it works well. Choose a spot away from wells, ditches and the vegetable patch, and dig deeper than feels necessary. A paving slab or a heavy planter set on top stops foxes, coyotes and farm dogs from reaching a small body, and gives you a place to put flowers.

About 28,003 people live in New London, which makes it the 19th-largest of the 23 Connecticut communities we cover. Worcester, roughly 66 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover New London run from there.

New London sits within easy reach of Norwich (15 miles), Middletown (33 miles) and Meriden (39 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from New London; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

The NFDA projected Connecticut's cremation rate at 66.1% for 2024.

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

4.3 years[3]

Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

A small pet at home in New London

Cremation habits in Connecticut and your small pet

Cremation covers about 66.1%[1] of human funerals in Connecticut, which puts it in the middle of the range. Local vets here are used to families who take a small pet home for burial, so if that's your plan, just tell the practice. Ask for a lined box or a pet body bag, and check whether a euthanasia fee includes aftercare you won't be using, so it can be taken off.

The Connecticut percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for New London, not as a count of pets.

Seasons and small-pet aftercare in New London

A small body is simple to keep safely for a short while whatever the season. Lay your pet on a towel in a shoebox or carrier, add a little of their hay or fleece, and put the box somewhere cool, dark and away from other animals. If it will be more than a few hours before you reach a vet or crematorium in or near New London, a fridge or a cool box with wrapped ice packs is kind and entirely normal. Nobody at the clinic will think twice about it, and it gives the family time to gather.

How much New London families usually pay

Local price levels matter too. Bank of America card data show pet care spending running well above the US average in Seattle and San Francisco, and below it in San Antonio, St Louis and Atlanta[5]. Expect New London quotes to follow the local cost of living. If burial away from home appeals, the median whole-body burial for a small pet across five US cemetery lists was about $350[6], by our estimate.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Connecticut: Connecticut costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, ashes and paperwork in Connecticut

Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. Rules in Connecticut may differ, so check locally, but for a rabbit or guinea pig the real questions are usually ownership of the land and keeping scavengers out.

The official Connecticut local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in New London.

The rules that apply across Connecticut (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Connecticut page. New London may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

Your first few hours, in order

  1. Ask to see your pet if the death happened at a New London clinic in your absence, perhaps during a dental under anaesthetic. Most practices are able to find you a quiet room.
  2. Ask what happened in plain terms, and whether anything could have been done. It's a fair question and a good vet will answer kindly.
  3. Decide whether to take your pet home, so you can bury them or say goodbye there, or whether the clinic should arrange the cremation instead.
  4. Take the bonded partner's needs into account. If the survivor didn't see the body, consider bringing your pet home briefly first.
  5. Confirm the aftercare in writing before you leave, including private or communal and the expected date for the ashes.
  6. Ask for the bill to be itemized, with the cremation listed on its own line rather than folded into the treatment.

Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret

Sitting right on Long Island Sound, New London has a maritime climate: winters are gentler than inland Connecticut, summers are humid but eased by sea breezes, and nor'easters or tropical storms can flood low streets near the water. After a hot-weather death, an interior room away from sunny windows and a few frozen packs under a cloth will hold for several hours. During a storm, wait for flooding to recede before driving.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Worcester to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Worcester (roughly 66 miles from New London) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How do Connecticut attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Connecticut human cremation rate at about 66.1%[1]. We show it on the New London page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from New London?

Usually yes. Norwich is about 15 miles away, Middletown is about 33 miles away and Meriden is about 39 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will a crematorium collect from a rural address near New London?

Some will, often for a mileage fee, and others only collect from vets on set days. For a rabbit or guinea pig, driving your pet in yourself is usually easier and cheaper. If you can't drive, your vet can often keep your pet in their cold room until the next crematorium collection, usually within a few days.

Will I actually get ashes back from my guinea pig?

Yes, from a genuine private cremation. Ash is mostly processed bone, and a median-weight guinea pig returns about 37 g[8] by our estimate, a couple of tablespoons. A rabbit returns more, around 74 g[9]. Ask the provider how they keep very small pets separate, because the real risk isn't losing everything but mixing with other remains.

Can I bury my rabbit in the garden in Connecticut?

In most places you can bury a pet on land you own, sometimes with local conditions attached. Check with your local council or county if you're unsure, and ask your landlord if you rent. Dig deep enough that foxes and dogs won't reach your pet, set a slab on top, take extra care if your rabbit was put to sleep, and call a vet first if the death was sudden, because of RHDV2.
