For small mammals, the rules worth knowing in Florida cover three things: burying on your own property, scattering ashes, and what to do if a rabbit may have died of a disease such as RHDV2. The first two are straightforward. The third is a good reason to call your vet before a garden burial whenever a rabbit dies without warning.

Your first few hours, in order

- Wrap your pet in a towel or fleece, then settle them into a carrier or shoebox. Find a cool spot for the box; if the weather is warm, seal them in a bag and use the fridge.
- Take a keepsake now if you'd like one: a clipping of fur or a clay print of a foot. It can't be done after cremation.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden, especially with a rabbit, so they can advise on RHDV2 before you bury anything or clean the hutch.
- Choose burial or cremation. If cremating, ask a provider serving Cocoa Beach for private cremation confirmed in writing.
