Saying goodbye to a rabbit or guinea pig in Hollywood

Hollywood, Florida

What families in Hollywood usually arrange

South Florida heat and humidity last most of the year in Hollywood, with August highs above 90F, so a pet's body needs cooling right away: wrap your pet in a towel, place ice packs around the belly and back, and keep the air conditioning running. Hurricane season runs from June through November, and storms can close roads and cut power. If that happens, keep your pet as cool as you can and arrange collection once it's safe.

Hollywood runs from beachfront condos and older homes near the Broadwalk and the Intracoastal to single-family neighbourhoods further west, and many residents live in apartments or condos with association rules. If your pet dies in a high-rise, think about lifts, security desks and where a vehicle can stop. When you ask for options, mention your building, floor and any front-desk procedure so collection goes smoothly.

Hollywood is big enough that some vets here see rabbits and guinea pigs routinely, but it's worth checking before you need one. Many general practices will handle a euthanasia and cremation for a small pet, yet fewer have a vet with real exotics experience. If your rabbit has been treated elsewhere, perhaps in a larger centre such as Hialeah, that practice can usually arrange aftercare too, even at a distance.

Hollywood is home to about 157,019 people, the 12th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 13 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Hollywood run from there.

Our pages for Hallandale Beach (2 miles), Dania Beach (3 miles) and Aventura (4 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Hollywood as well.

72.5%[1]

The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

4.3 years[3]

Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The published sources behind those figures are O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release.

Cremation habits in Florida and your small pet

When about 72.5%[1] of people in Florida are cremated, many children have already seen a grandparent's urn on a mantelpiece, so a small urn for a guinea pig doesn't seem strange to them. Some families place the pet's container beside a relative's. Others prefer something the child can hold. There's no convention to follow, and a small box of ashes can move between rooms as feelings change.

The Florida percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Hollywood, not as a count of pets.

Cool, covered and safe: Hollywood weather notes

Guinea pigs and ferrets can't cool themselves well either, and neither does well above about 80°F. With August highs near 91°F in Hollywood, keep every small pet in the coolest room during the afternoon, not only the rabbits. If you're driving a body to a vet or crematorium in the heat, run the air conditioning, keep the box low in the footwell away from direct sun, and go straight there without stopping for errands.

Plan a goodbye around the heat when you can. If a vet is coming to put an old rabbit or chinchilla to sleep in August, book an early morning slot while the house is still cool, and ask them to take your pet for cremation afterwards. Chinchillas overheat fast because of their dense fur, so keep the room cool on the day even when the end is expected.

Small pet cremation prices for Hollywood

Local price levels matter too. Bank of America card data show pet care spending running well above the US average in Seattle and San Francisco, and below it in San Antonio, St Louis and Atlanta[5]. Expect Hollywood quotes to follow the local cost of living. If burial away from home appeals, the median whole-body burial for a small pet across five US cemetery lists was about $350[6], by our estimate.

Burial and scattering rules in Florida

For small mammals, the rules worth knowing in Florida cover three things: burying on your own property, scattering ashes, and what to do if a rabbit may have died of a disease such as RHDV2. The first two are straightforward. The third is a good reason to call your vet before a garden burial whenever a rabbit dies without warning.

Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Hollywood.

The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Hollywood may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

What to do when your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Hollywood

  1. Ask to see your pet if the death happened at a Hollywood clinic in your absence, perhaps during a dental under anaesthetic. Most practices are able to find you a quiet room.
  2. Ask what happened in plain terms, and whether anything could have been done. It's a fair question and a good vet will answer kindly.
  3. Decide whether to take your pet home for a burial or goodbye, or leave them with the practice for cremation.
  4. Take the bonded partner's needs into account. Where the remaining pet hasn't seen the body, it may be worth a short trip home before the cremation.
  5. Confirm the aftercare in writing before you leave, including private or communal and the expected date for the ashes.
  6. Ask for the bill to be itemized, so the treatment and the aftercare appear as separate lines.

Ways Hollywood families remember rabbits and guinea pigs

Hollywood's high water table and sandy soil make backyard burial difficult, and most condos and many rentals don't allow it anyway, which is one reason cremation is so common in Broward County. If you want your pet's ashes, choose a private cremation; a communal cremation costs less and no ashes come back. Ask for a written total covering collection, cremation and the container, so there are no surprises.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hollywood?

Usually yes. Hallandale Beach is about 2 miles away, Dania Beach is about 3 miles away and Aventura is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Hialeah to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Hialeah (roughly 13 miles from Hollywood) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How does Hollywood's weather affect small pet aftercare?

August is the hottest month in Hollywood, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.

Why does the Hollywood page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?

You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.

Can I drop my rabbit off at the crematorium myself?

Usually, yes, and for a small pet it's often the simplest option. Call ahead so they expect you, bring your pet wrapped in a towel in a sturdy box, and keep the car cool. Dropping off yourself often avoids a collection fee and lets you see where your pet will be cared for. Some crematoria near Hollywood will even let you wait.
