Key West, Florida
What small pet aftercare in Key West looks like
Key West is frost-free, with January lows around 66F and August highs above 90F, so there is no cool season to buy extra time. As soon as your pet has died, get them into air conditioning straight away, lay them on a towel, surround them with ice packs wrapped in cloth, and find out if your clinic can hold them while collection is arranged. In a hurricane evacuation, the whole chain can empty out, so plan early.
Key West sits at the far end of the Overseas Highway in Monroe County, roughly 160 miles and several hours' drive from Miami, and that distance shapes pet aftercare here more than anything else. Homes are mostly tightly packed conch cottages, apartments and condos in Old Town and New Town, plus Navy housing. Ask any provider whether cremation happens in the Keys or on the mainland, and how long the ashes take to come back down US 1.
In a close-knit town like Key West, your vet probably knows the people who run the regional crematorium. Ask them plainly how small pets are handled there, whether they're cremated alone and how long the ashes take to come back. A local recommendation is worth a lot, but a written note that says private is still worth asking for, just so nobody has to wonder later.
Key West is home to about 24,999 people, the 103rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover.
Our pages for Homestead (105 miles, a larger centre), Naples (110 miles) and Cutler Bay (115 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Key West as well.
72.5%[1]
The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

What the local cremation rate tells you
In Florida, about 72.5%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates anywhere. That familiarity shows in the questions small-pet owners ask: less about whether, more about whether they'll really get ashes back from something so tiny. They will, from a genuine private cremation. A rabbit returns a few tablespoons of bone ash, enough for a keepsake urn or to share a pinch between two children.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Key West weather and your small pet
A summer power cut or a failed air conditioner in Key West is a real danger for small mammals, and it's also when some families lose one. Keep a cool box and a few ice packs in the freezer through May, June, July, August, September and October. If a pet dies, the same kit keeps the body safe until a vet or crematorium opens, and meanwhile the frozen packs, wrapped in a towel, give the survivors something cool to lie against.
Guinea pigs and ferrets can't cool themselves well either, and neither does well above about 80°F. With August highs near 91°F in Key West, keep every small pet in the coolest room during the afternoon, not only the rabbits. If you're driving a body to a vet or crematorium in the heat, run the air conditioning, keep the box low in the footwell away from direct sun, and go straight there without stopping for errands.

What rabbit and guinea pig cremation costs in Key West
The euthanasia is often a separate bill from the cremation, and families in Key West are sometimes surprised by it. There's no national figure for rabbits, but CareCredit's 2025 study puts cat euthanasia at $158 in a clinic and $359 at home[5], the closest published benchmark for a small pet. Exotics vets may charge a little more for sedation, so ask for both figures together.

What Florida allows for small pets
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[7], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[8]. Whatever applies in Florida, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Key West.
We keep Florida's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Florida rules summary. Before a home burial in Key West, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
A calm plan for the next 24 hours
- Put on gloves before touching a rabbit that died without warning or had blood around the mouth or nose. Hands, clothing and bedding can all carry RHDV2.
- Place your rabbit in a sealed bag inside a lidded box, and keep the other rabbits away from the body and the hutch.
- Phone your vet before burying or disposing of anything. In the US, federal advice is to consult a vet or animal health official first.
- Bag the hay, bedding and litter, then set the bags aside somewhere separate until the vet has told you how to get rid of them.
- Scrub the enclosure, dishes and water bottle with a disinfectant your vet recommends, then let everything dry fully.
- Ask about testing and vaccination for the rabbits that remain. Until you have answers, cremating the body is generally the safer option.
Small keepsakes for a small life
Key West is famous for its animals, from the six-toed cats at the Hemingway Home to the chickens that roam the streets. Burial is difficult here, since the island is coral rock with water close beneath and even the city cemetery uses above-ground tombs, so most families choose cremation. A little ash scattered at sea off the island, or a potted bougainvillea on the porch, makes a fitting memorial.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Key West?
Usually yes. Homestead is about 105 miles away, Naples is about 110 miles away and Cutler Bay is about 115 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Key West climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the Key West page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Should my other rabbit see the body?
Many keepers find it helps. Letting the survivor sniff, groom or lie beside the body for a while often seems to reduce searching and restlessness afterwards. Give them 30 minutes to an hour somewhere quiet. Then watch closely: a grieving rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings can develop gut stasis within a day, which needs a vet quickly.
Can two bonded rabbits be cremated together in Key West?
Yes, if you ask for a joint cremation. Their ashes are mixed and returned in one container, which many families find comforting. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined or buried together. Put the request in writing, because the default is to keep every pet separate.
What is RHDV2 and why does it matter for rabbit aftercare?
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 kills 50-100%[9] of infected rabbits, often with no warning signs. It was first found in a US pet rabbit in 2018 and has since spread to wild rabbits across much of the West. The USDA asks owners to speak to a vet or animal health officials before disposing of a rabbit's body[10], because the virus survives in soil and on bedding.
