Lake Nona, Florida
Finding the right help for a small pet in Lake Nona
Lake Nona takes its name from one of several large lakes in the area, and many residents have pets who spend time on screened lanais and in fenced yards. Summers are long and humid. When a death happens at home, move your pet to the coolest indoor room, lay them on a towel, and put a wrapped cold pack under the body while you call providers.
Many Lake Nona households are young families or professionals who moved here for work at the medical campus or the airport. If you have never arranged aftercare before, it helps to know the basic choice: communal cremation, where ashes are not returned, or private cremation, where they are. Ask each provider what is included, how long it takes, and whether they return a paw print.
Ashes for small pets from Lake Nona can take a little longer to return, because the crematorium may collect from country vets only once or twice a week. That's normal. If a date matters, perhaps a birthday or a school holiday so the children can be there when the ashes come home, mention it when you book and ask whether you can collect them in person.
Lake Nona is one of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 13 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lake Nona run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Meadow Woods (5 miles, a larger centre), Buenaventura Lakes (6 miles, a larger centre) and Narcoossee (6 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

How Florida thinks about cremation
About 72.5%[1] of people in Florida are cremated, so cremation feels ordinary here, and that carries over to pets. Families rarely feel they need to explain why they want a rabbit's ashes home. Crematoria are well established and used to small animals. Where cremation is this familiar, the useful question isn't whether to cremate but how: private or communal, and how your provider keeps a pet weighing a pound or two apart from much larger animals.
The Florida percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Lake Nona, not as a count of pets.
Timing a small pet's aftercare around Lake Nona's seasons
Whatever the weather in Lake Nona, the rule for a small pet is the same: keep the body cool, covered and out of the sun. A rabbit or guinea pig cools and stiffens faster than a dog, so wrap them gently soon after death while they're still easy to position, then place them in a box lined with their bedding. In warm weather, a sealed bag inside the box and a spot in the fridge or a cooler keeps them peaceful for a day or two. In cold weather, an unheated garage does the same job.

Where the money goes: small pet aftercare in Lake Nona
Rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas sit in the lightest band on nearly every US price list. CareCredit lists pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5], and small mammals tend to fall at the lower end. Lake Nona prices will land somewhere around there, higher if you add home collection, an after-hours visit or a carved wooden urn.

Burial, ashes and paperwork in Florida
Cremation needs no permit anywhere in Florida; the rules that matter for small pets are about burial. A rabbit or guinea pig is easy to bury at home, so it's worth knowing the local limits first: whether you need to own the land, how far to stay from water, and whether a pet that was put to sleep needs a deeper grave.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Lake Nona.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Lake Nona or your HOA adds anything.
A checklist for Lake Nona small-pet owners
- Ask your pet sitter to call you first, and not to touch anything until they have, should your pet die while you're out of Lake Nona.
- Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around your pet, a closed box and the coolest room in the house.
- Ask your vet to hold your pet in cold storage until you get back. A few days is no trouble for most practices.
- Make sure the survivor is being watched, particularly for appetite and droppings, and leave the sitter with the vet's phone number.
- Decide on aftercare when you're back and able to think. There's no need to choose from a hotel room.
- Say goodbye at the clinic if you'd like to, before the cremation or burial goes ahead.
Keepsakes and memorials for small pets
Lake Nona is a master-planned community in southeast Orlando, just south of Orlando International Airport, built around a medical campus with hospitals, research centers and a medical school. Most homes are newer single-family houses and townhomes, with apartments near the town center. Because the neighborhoods are laid out along wide, well-marked roads, collection is usually easy to arrange; just give the provider your gated community's entry details.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lake Nona?
Usually yes. Meadow Woods is about 5 miles away, Buenaventura Lakes is about 6 miles away and Narcoossee is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Lake Nona actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 13 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Lake Nona and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Lake Nona page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where do people near Lake Nona find an exotic vet?
In smaller towns, many families travel to a larger centre such as Orlando for rabbit, chinchilla or ferret care. Your local vet can still help at the end: euthanasia of a small pet is routine for any vet, and they can send your pet to a regional crematorium. If you have a choice, ask whether they'll sedate first, which is kinder for small, nervous animals.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
Will I actually get ashes back from my guinea pig?
Yes, from a genuine private cremation. Ash is mostly processed bone, and a median-weight guinea pig returns about 37 g[7] by our estimate, a couple of tablespoons. A rabbit returns more, around 74 g[8]. Ask the provider how they keep very small pets separate, because the real risk isn't losing everything but mixing with other remains.
