Middleburg, Florida
What families in Middleburg usually arrange
Black Creek rose to record levels during Hurricane Irma in 2017, and properties near the water flooded badly, so creekside ground is a poor choice for a grave. Many Middleburg lots have higher, drier land farther back, but keep well clear of wells and septic fields. Plenty of families skip burial entirely, choosing cremation and a simple urn inside, or a portion scattered under a favorite oak on the high side of the property.
Middleburg is an unincorporated community in Clay County, roughly 22 miles southwest of Jacksonville, that began as a 19th-century river town on Black Creek, which feeds the St. Johns River. It now blends older houses on big wooded lots with newer subdivisions along Blanding Boulevard, which is State Road 21. Some rural homes sit at the end of unpaved roads, so describe the turns, the surface and any gates when you book a pickup.
Home burial is the most common goodbye for small pets in towns like Middleburg, and with a little care it works well. Choose a spot away from wells, ditches and the vegetable patch, and dig deeper than feels necessary. A paving slab or a heavy planter set on top stops foxes, coyotes and farm dogs from reaching a small body, and gives you a place to put flowers.
Middleburg's population is around 12,000, the 149th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Jacksonville, roughly 22 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Middleburg run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Fleming Island (9 miles, a larger centre), Orange Park (12 miles) and Green Cove Springs (12 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Why the Florida cremation rate matters here
Cremation is routine for people in Florida, at about 72.5%[1], and that familiarity sometimes pushes families toward private cremation without much thought. Communal cremation is a perfectly caring choice for a small pet, especially if you'd have scattered the ashes anyway or already have a garden memorial for earlier pets. The one thing to settle before you choose is whether you'd like anything back.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Cool, covered and safe: Middleburg weather notes
Whatever the weather in Middleburg, the rule for a small pet is the same: keep the body cool, covered and out of the sun. A rabbit or guinea pig cools and stiffens faster than a dog, so wrap them gently soon after death while they're still easy to position, then place them in a box lined with their bedding. In warm weather, a sealed bag inside the box and a spot in the fridge or a cooler keeps them peaceful for a day or two. In cold weather, an unheated garage does the same job.

Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Middleburg
Rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas sit in the lightest band on nearly every US price list. CareCredit lists pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5], and small mammals tend to fall at the lower end. Middleburg prices will land somewhere around there, higher if you add home collection, an after-hours visit or a carved wooden urn.
The Florida price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Burial and scattering rules in Florida
Cremation needs no permit anywhere in Florida; the rules that matter for small pets are about burial. A rabbit or guinea pig is easy to bury at home, so it's worth knowing the local limits first: whether you need to own the land, how far to stay from water, and whether a pet that was put to sleep needs a deeper grave.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Middleburg.
For Florida's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Florida guide. Local rules in Middleburg can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do when your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Middleburg
- Book the appointment for a calm time of day, ideally with a vet who sees rabbits, guinea pigs or ferrets. Ask whether a home visit is possible.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, so you can simply ask the vet to take your pet afterwards, or bring a lined box to take them home.
- Bring the bonded companion if it's practical, or plan for them to see the body when you get home.
- Ask for a paw or foot print at the appointment. Many vets will make one for you.
- Confirm private or communal on paper, and find out the date you can expect to pick up the ashes.
- If you plan a garden burial after euthanasia, dig well down and lay a slab over the grave, because the drug stays in the body and can harm wildlife.
Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret
Winters in Middleburg bring chilly nights and the occasional frost, but from May to October the air is hot and heavy. On a warm day, carry a pet who has died indoors, onto a blanket in an air-conditioned room, and set wrapped ice against their back and belly. When a hurricane is on the way, call providers early, because low roads near Black Creek can go under water.

Questions people ask
Why does the Middleburg page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Jacksonville to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Jacksonville (roughly 22 miles from Middleburg) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Middleburg?
Usually yes. Fleming Island is about 9 miles away, Orange Park is about 12 miles away and Green Cove Springs is about 12 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[7] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
Should my other rabbit see the body?
Many keepers find it helps. Letting the survivor sniff, groom or lie beside the body for a while often seems to reduce searching and restlessness afterwards. Give them 30 minutes to an hour somewhere quiet. Then watch closely: a grieving rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings can develop gut stasis within a day, which needs a vet quickly.
Can a ferret be cremated with its hammock or toys?
Often, but ask first. Natural fabrics and paper usually go in; plastic, metal buckles, bells and synthetic fleece may need to be removed. Many families put in a sock the ferret stole or a short note, and keep the harness and hammock at home. If something has to come out, ask the provider to return it with the ashes.
