Wabasso, Florida
Rabbit and guinea pig cremation around Wabasso
Wabasso sits close to Pelican Island, the first national wildlife refuge in the United States, and herons, pelicans and ospreys are everyday sights along this stretch of lagoon. Families who watched those birds with a pet beside them on the porch sometimes want the memorial to face the water. A small container of ashes on a sill, or a native planting in the yard, keeps that view part of the tribute.
Summers in Wabasso peak around 91 degrees in August, and winter lows seldom dip much below the low 50s, so there's no cold season to lean on after a death at home. Carry your pet somewhere with the air conditioning running, lay them on a folded sheet over a hard floor, and slide a cold pack in a pillowcase beneath the neck and chest. Aim to have collection arranged within hours rather than overnight.
Home-visit vets are thin on the ground near Wabasso, so many small-pet euthanasias happen at the clinic. You can still make it gentle. Bring your pet in their usual carrier with a handful of hay, bring the bonded partner if it's calm enough to travel, and ask for the first or last appointment of the day, when the waiting room is quiet and nobody is rushed.
Wabasso is home to about 1,000 people, the 223rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Wabasso are based about 34 miles away in Port St. Lucie, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Orchid (3 miles), Winter Beach (3 miles) and Sebastian (5 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
72.5%[1]
The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record and Embrace Pet Insurance.

Why the Florida cremation rate matters here
Pet crematoria tend to be plentiful in Florida, where roughly 72.5%[1] of people are cremated, and that usually means shorter waits. Some will cremate a rabbit or guinea pig within a day or two of drop-off and let you collect the ashes that same week. If timing matters to you, perhaps because a child is leaving for camp or a relative is visiting, ask for an expected return date before you choose.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Wabasso weather and your small pet
If a long weekend or holiday means no crematorium in Wabasso can take your pet for several days during May, June, July, August and September, a freezer is the kindest place for a small body. Seal your pet in a freezer bag, set it in a small box and freeze it. Tell the crematorium when you drop your pet off; there's no need to defrost first, and it makes no difference to a private cremation.
Hot months in Wabasso also bring flies, and flystrike is the single most common recorded cause of death in English pet rabbits, at 10.9%[5] in one study. After a death in warm weather, cover the body and bring it indoors promptly. For the surviving rabbits, check their rear ends every day through May, June, July, August and September; older or overweight rabbits that can't clean themselves are most at risk.

Where the money goes: small pet aftercare in Wabasso
The spread of quotes in Wabasso can be wider than you'd guess for such a small pet. One pet insurer's published US ranges run from about $30 for a communal cremation to $500 or more for a private one[6], with partitioned cremation somewhere in between. A rabbit won't reach the top of that range, but extras add up quickly, so ask each provider for one written total that includes collection and the container.

What the rules in Florida mean for a rabbit or ferret
Scattering rules rarely cause problems with a small pet, because a rabbit or guinea pig produces so little, rarely more than a small cupful and often much less. Private land with permission is fine almost everywhere. Parks, beaches and nature reserves in Florida may have their own rules, so check before you go. Many families end up burying the ashes instead, which avoids the question and gives them a fixed place to visit.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Wabasso.
We keep Florida's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Florida rules summary. Before a home burial in Wabasso, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
A checklist for Wabasso small-pet owners
- Ask your pet sitter to call you first, and not to touch anything until they have, should your pet die while you're out of Wabasso.
- Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around your pet, a closed box and the coolest room in the house.
- Ask your vet to hold your pet in their cold room until you're home. Most will do this for a few days without fuss.
- Make sure the survivor is being watched, particularly for appetite and droppings, and leave the sitter with the vet's phone number.
- Decide on aftercare when you're back and can think clearly. This isn't a choice you have to make from a hotel.
- Say goodbye at the clinic if that would help, ahead of the burial or cremation taking place.
Keepsakes and memorials for small pets
Wabasso is an unincorporated community on the Indian River County mainland, set between Sebastian and Vero Beach where the Wabasso Causeway crosses the Indian River Lagoon to the barrier island. Houses range from older homes on shaded streets to properties carved out of former citrus groves. Treasure Coast providers usually include Wabasso in their area, though Port St. Lucie, about 34 miles south, is far enough that some quote extra mileage.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Wabasso follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Wabasso actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Port St. Lucie, about 34 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Wabasso and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the Wabasso climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Wabasso?
Usually yes. Orchid is about 3 miles away, Winter Beach is about 3 miles away and Sebastian is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Wabasso?
Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.
Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Wabasso?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[8], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
