Williston, Florida
How Williston families say goodbye to small pets
Williston hosts the Central Florida Peanut Festival each October, and fields of peanuts and watermelons still surround the town. Pets here often lead outdoor, country lives on farms and big lots, with springs and limestone woods close by. Many families mark a loss at home, under a tree near the house or by the porch where the animal slept, and keep the ashes indoors in a simple urn.
Williston is a small Levy County city in north-central Florida's spring and farm country, roughly half an hour's drive from both Gainesville and Ocala. Many families live in older homes in town or out on acreage along the county roads, where pets have room to roam. Because providers are often based in the larger cities, ask how far they travel and whether a drop-off would be quicker, especially on a weekend.
Rabbits and cavies are popular youth livestock projects around towns like Williston, and a child who shows animals may lose one mid-season. Treat it as a real loss even if the animal was kept partly for showing. Many families bury a show rabbit at home, others choose private cremation so the child can keep a small tin. Either way, let the child decide how involved they want to be.
Williston is home to about 3,456 people, the 196th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover.
Our pages for Archer (11 miles), Bronson (12 miles) and Gainesville (20 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Williston as well.

6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local funeral customs and a very small pet
Around 72.5%[1] of people who die in Florida are cremated. Where cremation is this normal, pet crematoria tend to compete, and some list a separate price for pocket pets rather than charging the same as for a cat. It's worth asking for that price by name. The difference is rarely large, but it tells you the provider handles rabbits and guinea pigs often enough to have thought about them properly.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Williston only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and timing in Williston
However you're travelling in or around Williston, a small pet's body travels best lying flat in a lidded box, wedged so it can't slide. Put the box on the floor of the car or strap it in with a seatbelt, keep the car at a comfortable temperature and take the most direct route. If you're walking or using transit, a sturdy shopping bag around the box keeps things discreet.

Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Williston
Rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas sit in the lightest band on nearly every US price list. CareCredit lists pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5], and small mammals tend to fall at the lower end. Williston prices will land somewhere around there, higher if you add home collection, an after-hours visit or a carved wooden urn.

Local rules worth knowing in Florida
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body. Since 2003, US labels for euthanasia drugs have carried a warning that euthanized animals must be disposed of so that scavenging wildlife can't eat them[7]. That's why vets in Florida and elsewhere often suggest cremation after euthanasia, or a well-protected grave with a heavy slab over it.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Williston.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Williston may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
The first day, step by step
- Ask your pet sitter to call you first, and not to touch anything until they have, should your pet die while you're out of Williston.
- Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around the body, a lid on the box, and the coldest room they can find.
- Ask your vet to hold your pet in their cold room until you're home. Most will do this for a few days without fuss.
- Make sure the survivor is being watched, particularly for appetite and droppings, and leave the sitter with the vet's phone number.
- Decide on aftercare when you're back and can think clearly. This isn't a choice you have to make from a hotel.
- Say goodbye at the clinic if you'd like to, before the cremation or burial goes ahead.
Remembering your small pet in Williston
This part of Florida gets real winter, at least by state standards: a handful of frosty nights most years, and cool mornings from December into February. Summers, though, are long and humid. In hot weather, carry your pet to the shadiest room, rest them on an old quilt and add cloth-wrapped ice packs. On a cold night, an unheated garage or porch will usually hold them safely until morning.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Williston follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Williston?
Usually yes. Archer is about 11 miles away, Bronson is about 12 miles away and Gainesville is about 20 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will a crematorium collect from a rural address near Williston?
Some will, often for a mileage fee, and others only collect from vets on set days. For a rabbit or guinea pig, driving your pet in yourself is usually easier and cheaper. If you can't drive, your vet can often keep your pet in their cold room until the next crematorium collection, usually within a few days.
Can two bonded rabbits be cremated together in Williston?
Yes, if you ask for a joint cremation. Their ashes are mixed and returned in one container, which many families find comforting. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined or buried together. Put the request in writing, because the default is to keep every pet separate.
What is RHDV2 and why does it matter for rabbit aftercare?
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 kills 50-100%[8] of infected rabbits, often with no warning signs. It was first found in a US pet rabbit in 2018 and has since spread to wild rabbits across much of the West. The USDA asks owners to speak to a vet or animal health officials before disposing of a rabbit's body[9], because the virus survives in soil and on bedding.
Can I drop my rabbit off at the crematorium myself?
Usually, yes, and for a small pet it's often the simplest option. Call ahead so they expect you, bring your pet wrapped in a towel in a sturdy box, and keep the car cool. Dropping off yourself often avoids a collection fee and lets you see where your pet will be cared for. Some crematoria near Williston will even let you wait.
