Summers here reach the low nineties and feel heavy with Piedmont humidity, while winter nights often drop into the thirties. In the warm months, lay your pet somewhere air-conditioned, tuck a cloth-covered freezer pack under the body, and aim to have them collected within a day. Game-day weekends in autumn clog the roads near campus and Sanford Stadium, so allow extra time for any pickup on a Saturday.
The university's veterinary college runs a teaching hospital, and many local pets have been treated there at some point in their lives. If your pet dies at a clinic or hospital, the staff can often hold the body and pass it to a cremation provider you choose, which saves you a difficult drive. Burial or cremation: the local habit
Cremation covers about 54.2%[1] of human funerals in Georgia, which puts it in the middle of the range. Local vets here are used to families who take a small pet home for burial, so if that's your plan, just tell the practice. Ask for a lined box or a pet body bag, and check whether a euthanasia fee includes aftercare you won't be using, so it can be taken off.

After a death in warm weather, cover the body and bring it indoors promptly. For the surviving rabbits, check their rear ends every day through June, July and August; older or overweight rabbits that can't clean themselves are most at risk.
Plan a goodbye around the heat when you can. If a vet is coming to put an old rabbit or chinchilla to sleep in July, book an early morning slot while the house is still cool, and ask them to take your pet for cremation afterwards. Chinchillas overheat fast because of their dense fur, so keep the room cool on the day even when the end is expected.

Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Athens?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 92°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Athens?

Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[9] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
