Atlanta's summers are long and sticky, with July highs near 90°F and humid nights that barely cool off. If a pet dies at home between May and September, move them into air conditioning straight away, place them on a towel, and pack ice or frozen bags around the body. Metro traffic can make any pickup slow, especially near the Downtown Connector or I-285 at rush hour, so cooling buys you time.
The City of Atlanta's solid-waste service will remove a dead animal placed at the curb or found in a public right-of-way, and it handles animals on private property differently. Anything on an interstate or state highway is a Georgia Department of Transportation report. None of that involves cremation or returning remains. If you want your pet's ashes, you will need a private provider, usually booked directly or through your vet.
In a city the size of Atlanta, the hard part usually isn't finding a crematorium. It's finding one that handles very small animals with real care. Large metros have several pet crematoria, and at least one or two will see rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets every week. Ask how they keep a two-pound body separate in a chamber built for dogs: a dedicated tray, a smaller unit or a run on its own. Providers who do this often will answer without hesitating.

How Georgia thinks about cremation
Cremation now accounts for about 54.2%[1] of human deaths in Georgia, while burial keeps a loyal following. For small mammals, that split plays out in the back yard: plenty of families still dig a grave for a guinea pig, and plenty more ask for a private cremation so they can keep the ashes indoors. Vets here are used to both requests, so say plainly which one you'd like.

Timing a small pet's aftercare around Atlanta's seasons
Hot months in Atlanta also bring flies, and flystrike is the single most common recorded cause of death in English pet rabbits, at 10.9%[5] in one study. After a death in warm weather, cover the body and bring it indoors promptly. For the surviving rabbits, check their rear ends every day through June, July and August; older or overweight rabbits that can't clean themselves are most at risk.
If a long weekend or holiday means no crematorium in Atlanta can take your pet for several days during June, July and August, a freezer is the kindest place for a small body. Seal your pet in a freezer bag, set it in a small box and freeze it. Tell the crematorium when you drop your pet off; there's no need to defrost first, and it makes no difference to a private cremation.

For small mammals, the rules worth knowing in Georgia cover three things: burying on your own property, scattering ashes, and what to do if a rabbit may have died of a disease such as RHDV2. The first two are straightforward. The third is a good reason to call your vet before a garden burial whenever a rabbit dies without warning.

A calm plan for the next 24 hours
- Check gently and take a moment. Small pets often go quietly at night. If in doubt, watch the chest and feel for a pulse, or ring the vet, who can confirm over the phone or in person.
- Let the bonded partner say goodbye. Put the survivor with the body for 30 minutes to an hour somewhere calm, then separate them.
- Wrap your pet in a towel or fleece and place them in a shoebox or carrier. Keep the box somewhere cool; in warm weather, use a sealed bag and the fridge.
- Take a keepsake now if you want one. Snip a little fur, or press a foot into clay. Once the cremation has happened there's no second chance.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden, especially with a rabbit, so they can advise on RHDV2 before you bury anything or clean the hutch.
- Choose burial or cremation. If cremating, ask a provider serving Atlanta for private cremation confirmed in writing.
- Watch the survivor over the following days: are they eating, drinking, passing droppings?

Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Atlanta?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[9], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
Should my other rabbit see the body?
Many keepers find it helps. Letting the survivor sniff, groom or lie beside the body for a while often seems to reduce searching and restlessness afterwards. Give them 30 minutes to an hour somewhere quiet. Then watch closely: a grieving rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings can develop gut stasis within a day, which needs a vet quickly.
Is private cremation worth it for a guinea pig?
It is if you want the ashes back to keep, scatter or bury later, particularly if you might move house. If a garden grave or communal cremation feels right, there's no need to pay more. A guinea pig's size doesn't make either choice less meaningful; what matters is what you'll be glad of a year from now.
