Cremation habits in Hawaii and your small pet

In the US, the USDA asks rabbit owners not to dispose of a rabbit's body without first consulting a veterinarian or animal health officials, because of RHDV2. That advice sits alongside any rules in Hawaii. In practice it means one phone call to the practice before you dig, any time a rabbit dies suddenly or for no clear reason. What is RHDV2 and why does it matter for rabbit aftercare?
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 kills 50-100%[8] of infected rabbits, often with no warning signs. It was first found in a US pet rabbit in 2018 and has since spread to wild rabbits across much of the West. The USDA asks owners to speak to a vet or animal health officials before disposing of a rabbit's body[9], because the virus survives in soil and on bedding.
How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?
Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[10] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
