Bellwood, Illinois
Rabbit and guinea pig cremation around Bellwood
Bellwood's July afternoons reach about 85 degrees and January nights about 19, and hard frost holds from December through March. If a small animal dies in the heat, a bungalow basement is usually the coolest place to lay it, on an old sheet with frozen water bottles beside it. In the colder months, a detached garage keeps the body chilled until a provider can come, often the next morning.
Bellwood is a close-knit west suburban village in Cook County, some 12 miles west of the Loop, served by a Union Pacific West Metra stop, and the Eisenhower Expressway along its southern edge. Streets are lined with brick bungalows, Cape Cods and two-flats on narrow lots, many with a garage off the alley. When arranging a pickup, say whether the driver should come to the alley or the front door.
Collection from around Bellwood can be expensive or simply unavailable, because the nearest crematorium may be an hour away. The upside of a small pet is that you can take them yourself. Wrap them in a towel, place them in a sturdy box, keep the car cool and call ahead so someone expects you. Many families find that drive becomes a quiet last hour together.
Bellwood is home to about 18,116 people, the 139th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Chicago, about 12 miles (20 km) away, which is where some providers serving Bellwood are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Melrose Park (2 miles), Maywood (2 miles) and Elmhurst (4 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Cremation habits in Illinois and your small pet
With cremation at about 60.2%[1] for people in Illinois, a lot of families keep ashes at home, and small-pet ashes fit naturally into that. A guinea pig's container is small enough for a bookshelf or a child's bedside table. If you'd like a matching set later, perhaps for two bonded rabbits, choose a simple design now that you'll be able to find again in a few years.
The Illinois percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Bellwood, not as a count of pets.
Heat, cold and timing in Bellwood
Winter holidays can slow everything down. Some crematoria and vets serving Bellwood close or reduce collections over the year-end break, which falls in the depth of January, February, March and December. Sealed and boxed in a cold shed or unheated garage, a small pet will wait safely for those few days. Put a note on the box and something heavy on the lid so no one opens it by mistake.
If the ground is frozen through January, February, March and December and you've set your heart on a burial, a large outdoor planter can be a good stand-in. Fill it with compost in a garage or porch, set the tin of ashes into it, and move the planter to its permanent spot once the soil softens. Many Bellwood families plant bulbs on top in the fall so something flowers there in spring.

Where the money goes: small pet aftercare in Bellwood
The euthanasia is often a separate bill from the cremation, and families in Bellwood are sometimes surprised by it. There's no national figure for rabbits, but CareCredit's 2025 study puts cat euthanasia at $158 in a clinic and $359 at home[5], the closest published benchmark for a small pet. Exotics vets may charge a little more for sedation, so ask for both figures together.

What the rules in Illinois mean for a rabbit or ferret
Cremation needs no permit anywhere in Illinois; the rules that matter for small pets are about burial. A rabbit or guinea pig is easy to bury at home, so it's worth knowing the local limits first: whether you need to own the land, how far to stay from water, and whether a pet that was put to sleep needs a deeper grave.
To find your county or city office in Illinois, start with the official Illinois local government directory.
For Illinois's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Illinois guide. Local rules in Bellwood can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Your first few hours, in order
- Check gently and take a moment. Small pets often die quietly overnight. If you're unsure, look for breathing and a heartbeat; your vet can confirm by phone or in person.
- Let the bonded partner say goodbye. Put the survivor with the body for 30 minutes to an hour somewhere calm, then separate them.
- Wrap your pet in a towel or fleece, then settle them into a carrier or shoebox. Find a cool spot for the box; if the weather is warm, seal them in a bag and use the fridge.
- Take a keepsake now if you want one. Snip a little fur, or press a foot into clay. Once the cremation has happened there's no second chance.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden. With a rabbit in particular, they'll want to talk you through RHDV2 before the hutch is cleaned or anything goes into the ground.
- Choose burial or cremation. For cremation, get a provider serving Bellwood to confirm in writing that it's private.
- Watch the survivor for the next few days: eating, drinking and droppings.
Keepsakes and memorials for small pets
Addison Creek runs through Bellwood, and the Des Plaines River forest preserves are a few minutes east, but most families here keep a pet's memory at home. A small urn beside family photos, ashes worked into a window box, or a rose bush planted in the backyard are all typical. If you'd like to scatter on preserve land, ask the forest preserve district for permission first.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Bellwood?
The closest communities we cover are Melrose Park (about 2 miles), Maywood (about 2 miles) and Elmhurst (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Bellwood too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 12 miles from Bellwood) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Bellwood climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Why does the Bellwood page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[1] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[7] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
