Saying goodbye to a rabbit or guinea pig in Godfrey

Godfrey, Illinois

How Godfrey families say goodbye to small pets

The Great River Road runs below Godfrey's bluffs, and each winter bald eagles gather along the Mississippi near Alton, a landscape many residents know well from years of outings with their animals. Scattering ashes in the river or on public riverfront land may need permission, so check first. A wooded corner of your own lot is a simpler and more private place to remember.

Godfrey spreads along the bluffs just north of Alton in Madison County, about 22 miles from downtown St. Louis, with a mix of subdivisions, older homes on wooded lots and some rural acreage. Lewis and Clark Community College occupies a large campus here. Providers serving the Metro East and the Alton area can collect from home; mention long driveways, steep grades or gravel lanes when you call.

Wild rabbits are rarely far away in and around Godfrey, and neither are predators. That affects both health and burial. A pet rabbit that dies suddenly may have picked up a virus from wild rabbits through grass, hay or insects, and a buried body can be dug up by foxes within days. Talk to your vet before burying if the death was unexplained, and bury deep either way.

Godfrey is home to about 17,620 people, the 146th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Godfrey are based about 22 miles away in St. Louis, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

For a second opinion on price, Alton (5 miles), Florissant (12 miles, a larger centre) and Hazelwood (14 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Godfrey routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

60.2%[1]

The NFDA projected Illinois's cremation rate at 60.2% for 2024.

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

4.3 years[3]

Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The published sources behind those figures are O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release.

How Illinois thinks about cremation

In Illinois, about 60.2%[1] of people are cremated, and burial still has plenty of supporters. That mix gives small-pet owners real options, including pet cemeteries that accept rabbits and guinea pigs alongside cats and dogs. A cemetery plot costs more than a garden grave, but it suits families who rent, expect to move or want somewhere that will be tended.

That Illinois rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Godfrey only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Keeping a small body cool in Godfrey's climate

Many families in cold places cremate in winter and bury the ashes in spring. For a rabbit, that often means a small tin kept on a shelf until the ground softens, then a planting under the lilac or beside where the run used to stand. It keeps the garden ritual without asking anyone to hack at frozen soil in January, when average lows sit around 19°F.

Cold snaps in Godfrey can cause confusion with the smallest pets. Hamsters and African pygmy hedgehogs kept in a chilly room in January can drop into a torpor that looks exactly like death: cold, limp and barely breathing. Before you assume the worst, warm your pet gently in your hands or against your body for 30 minutes, and call a vet. Once a pet has truly died, a cool, covered box is fine.

Small pet cremation prices for Godfrey

If you'd rather bury than cremate but don't have a yard, a pet cemetery is the other route. One pet insurer's published US prices for a plot for pets under 30 lb start at about $400 to $600[5], several times the cost of a private cremation. For most Godfrey small-pet owners, the realistic choice is between a garden grave, which costs almost nothing, a communal cremation and a private one.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Illinois: Illinois costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, ashes and paperwork in Illinois

Cremation needs no permit anywhere in Illinois; the rules that matter for small pets are about burial. A rabbit or guinea pig is easy to bury at home, so it's worth knowing the local limits first: whether you need to own the land, how far to stay from water, and whether a pet that was put to sleep needs a deeper grave.

Illinois keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Godfrey.

The Illinois page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Godfrey's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

A checklist for Godfrey small-pet owners

  1. Check the whole group straight away. If one guinea pig or chinchilla in a herd has died suddenly, look closely at the others for signs of illness.
  2. Remove the body promptly once the others have had a little while with it; you don't want them huddled next to it all day.
  3. Note the date, age and any symptoms somewhere you'll keep. Years of notes like this can show your vet a pattern across the herd.
  4. Decide aftercare animal by animal. Some keepers choose private cremation for certain pets and communal for others.
  5. Label every box clearly when you're sending two or more animals together to a crematorium that serves Godfrey.
  6. Rebalance the group: watch for new squabbles or a lonely animal, and give extra hiding places while things settle.

Small keepsakes for a small life

Godfrey's July highs average around 87 degrees and January lows about 19, with freezing weather from December into March. Humid summer days are the time to act quickly: keep your pet's body in air conditioning with ice packs and book collection promptly. In winter, a garage or shed keeps the body cool overnight, as long as other animals and wildlife can't get to it.

Questions people ask

Why does the Godfrey page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[1] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Does the Godfrey climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 87°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Godfrey?

Usually yes. Alton is about 5 miles away, Florissant is about 12 miles away and Hazelwood is about 14 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to St. Louis to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in St. Louis (roughly 22 miles from Godfrey) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How long does it take to get small pet ashes back in Godfrey?

Many families receive private cremation ashes in about 5-10 days[7], sometimes sooner if you drop your pet off yourself. Where the crematorium collects from vets only once or twice a week, it can take longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether you can collect in person rather than waiting for the vet's next delivery.

What is RHDV2 and why does it matter for rabbit aftercare?

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 kills 50-100%[8] of infected rabbits, often with no warning signs. It was first found in a US pet rabbit in 2018 and has since spread to wild rabbits across much of the West. The USDA asks owners to speak to a vet or animal health officials before disposing of a rabbit's body[9], because the virus survives in soil and on bedding.
