Ottawa, Illinois
Rabbit and guinea pig cremation around Ottawa
Ottawa sits where the Fox River empties into the Illinois, the LaSalle County seat and a town of about 18,000 roughly 70 miles southwest of Chicago. Many houses are older frame and brick homes on the hilly streets near the rivers, with newer ones on the outskirts. Because providers serving the Illinois Valley may be based in another town, ask about the drive and any added fee before arranging a home pickup.
Ottawa is a gateway to Starved Rock and Buffalo Rock state parks, and the Illinois and Michigan Canal towpath runs through town, so many residents have favorite outdoor places once shared with an animal. State parks set their own rules on scattering, so ask the park office before bringing ashes. Plenty of people instead keep a little in a locket and simply return to those trails to remember.
Collection from around Ottawa can be expensive or simply unavailable, because the nearest crematorium may be an hour away. The upside of a small pet is that you can take them yourself. Wrap them in a towel, place them in a sturdy box, keep the car cool and call ahead so someone expects you. Many families find that drive becomes a quiet last hour together.
Ottawa is home to about 18,684 people, the 132nd-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Chicago, about 71 miles (115 km) away, which is where some providers serving Ottawa are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Yorkville (29 miles), Shorewood (33 miles) and Oswego (34 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Burial or cremation: the local habit
With cremation at about 60.2%[1] for people in Illinois, a lot of families keep ashes at home, and small-pet ashes fit naturally into that. A guinea pig's container is small enough for a bookshelf or a child's bedside table. If you'd like a matching set later, perhaps for two bonded rabbits, choose a simple design now that you'll be able to find again in a few years.

Cool, covered and safe: Ottawa weather notes
Seasons shape small-pet aftercare more than people expect. Hot spells bring heatstroke and flystrike in rabbits; wet, cold spells are hard on outdoor guinea pigs and elderly rabbits. In Ottawa, ask your vet what they see most at this time of year, and whether they'd suggest changes for the survivors: moving a hutch into shade or indoors, adding extra bedding, or checking droppings daily while a bonded partner grieves. A small body itself is easy to keep safe for a day in a lined box somewhere cool.

Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Ottawa
Why doesn't a two-pound rabbit cost a tenth of what a large dog does? Because much of the price is handling, paperwork and returning the ashes, not fuel. By our estimate, private cremation costs about $9 per pound for a 15 lb pet but nearer $4 per pound at 100 lb[5], so the smallest pets pay the most per pound. For Ottawa families, the practical lesson is to compare total prices, not weight bands.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Illinois: Illinois costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Local rules worth knowing in Illinois
Rules in Illinois treat a rabbit or ferret like any other pet, which in practice means burial on land you own is usually fine and cremation is always allowed. The extra care small pets need is practical rather than legal: bury deep enough to stop foxes and dogs digging, keep away from vegetable beds, and never put a pet that was euthanized in a shallow grave.
Illinois keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Ottawa.
The rules that apply across Illinois (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Illinois page. Ottawa may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A checklist for Ottawa small-pet owners
- Make sure your pet has really died. Hamsters and pygmy hedgehogs can go into a cold-induced torpor that looks like death.
- Warm them gently for 30 minutes, cupped in your palms or held against your chest, and look closely for slow breathing or small movements.
- Call a vet if you're unsure. It's a common worry and they won't mind the question.
- Once you're certain, wrap your pet in soft cloth or tissue and lay them in something small, like a tea box or the box from a piece of jewelry.
- Keep the box somewhere cool while you decide between a garden burial, communal cremation or a private cremation in or near Ottawa.
- Ask the crematorium how they handle the very smallest pets, and be direct about whether a hamster or hedgehog this small will leave any ash to return.
Small keepsakes for a small life
Winters in the Illinois Valley are long and cold, and summers are humid and warm. A pet who dies in the heat should stay indoors on a washable blanket, with frozen packs placed around it, until collection, ideally the same day. Through the frozen months a garage or enclosed porch does the job overnight. If a summer thunderstorm knocks out the power, move the body to the basement, which stays coolest.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Illinois?
For people, yes: about 60.2%[1] of Illinois deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Ottawa follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 71 miles from Ottawa) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Ottawa?
The closest communities we cover are Yorkville (about 29 miles), Shorewood (about 33 miles) and Oswego (about 34 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Ottawa too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I drop my rabbit off at the crematorium myself?
Usually, yes, and for a small pet it's often the simplest option. Call ahead so they expect you, bring your pet wrapped in a towel in a sturdy box, and keep the car cool. Dropping off yourself often avoids a collection fee and lets you see where your pet will be cared for. Some crematoria near Ottawa will even let you wait.
Can two bonded rabbits be cremated together in Ottawa?
Yes, if you ask for a joint cremation. Their ashes are mixed and returned in one container, which many families find comforting. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined or buried together. Put the request in writing, because the default is to keep every pet separate.
Should my other rabbit see the body?
Many keepers find it helps. Letting the survivor sniff, groom or lie beside the body for a while often seems to reduce searching and restlessness afterwards. Give them 30 minutes to an hour somewhere quiet. Then watch closely: a grieving rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings can develop gut stasis within a day, which needs a vet quickly.

Our estimate: band midpoint price / representative weight: 0-30 lb (midpoint $137.50 / 15 lb) = $9.17/lb; 51-70 lb ($250 / 60 lb) = $4.17/lb; over 90 lb ($400 / ~100 lb) = $4.00/lb. How we calculate.
- [6] Using the industry rule of thumb of 1 cubic inch of urn space per pound of body weight, a 12 lb cat needs an urn of about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog needs about 70 cubic inches. Our estimate: urn cu in = body weight lb x 1 (industry rule of thumb, not a measured value). How we calculate.
