Urbandale, Iowa
Caring for a small pet's body in Urbandale
Living History Farms, the open-air museum on the city's western side, is a reminder that this was farmland within living memory, and many Urbandale yards still have room for a garden bed or a young tree. That's where plenty of families choose to scatter or place ashes. Walker Johnston Park and other city land come with scattering rules, so a quick call to Urbandale's parks staff should come first.
Urbandale wraps around the northwest corner of Des Moines, with the I-35/80 corridor cutting through it. The older east side is mostly mid-century ranch houses on tree-lined streets, while the newer west side has bigger homes, cul-de-sacs and townhouse developments running out toward Dallas County. Either way, most homes have a driveway and a garage door close to the house, which makes carrying a pet out to a waiting vehicle straightforward.
Home-visit vets are thin on the ground near Urbandale, so many small-pet euthanasias happen at the clinic. You can still make it gentle. Bring your pet in their usual carrier with a handful of hay, bring the bonded partner if it's calm enough to travel, and ask for the first or last appointment of the day, when the waiting room is quiet and nobody is rushed.
With roughly 48,570 residents, Urbandale is the 12th-largest of the 27 Iowa communities we cover. Des Moines, roughly 9 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Urbandale run from there.
Families in Urbandale often end up using a provider from Clive (2 miles), Johnston (5 miles) and West Des Moines (6 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation habits in Iowa and your small pet
With about 63.6%[1] of people in Iowa cremated, cremation is the majority choice but not an overwhelming one. That leaves room for local habits. In rented homes and apartments, private cremation is the practical route for a rabbit or ferret. In family homes with a yard, a garden grave is still common. Many families choose cremation specifically after a euthanasia, because the drug in the body can harm scavengers.
We take the Iowa rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Urbandale, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, cold and timing in Urbandale
Cold snaps in Urbandale can cause confusion with the smallest pets. Hamsters and African pygmy hedgehogs kept in a chilly room in January can drop into a torpor that looks exactly like death: cold, limp and barely breathing. Before you assume the worst, warm your pet gently in your hands or against your body for 30 minutes, and call a vet. Once a pet has truly died, a cool, covered box is fine.
Snow and ice can delay a crematorium's collection round, especially from outlying roads around Urbandale. For a small pet that's less of a worry than for a dog: a sealed bag in a lidded box in an unheated garage or porch keeps them well for several days in this kind of cold. Just keep the box out of reach of cats, dogs, mice and anything else that finds its way into outbuildings.

What rabbit and guinea pig cremation costs in Urbandale
Local price levels matter too. Bank of America card data show pet care spending running well above the US average in Seattle and San Francisco, and below it in San Antonio, St Louis and Atlanta[5]. Expect Urbandale quotes to follow the local cost of living. If burial away from home appeals, the median whole-body burial for a small pet across five US cemetery lists was about $350[6], by our estimate.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Iowa: Iowa costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial and scattering rules in Iowa
In the US, the USDA asks rabbit owners not to dispose of a rabbit's body without first consulting a veterinarian or animal health officials, because of RHDV2. That advice sits alongside any rules in Iowa. In practice it means one phone call to the practice before you dig, any time a rabbit dies suddenly or for no clear reason. Guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas can't catch this virus.

For Iowa's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Iowa guide. Local rules in Urbandale can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
The first day, step by step
- Put on gloves before you handle a rabbit that died suddenly or bled from the nose or mouth. RHDV2 spreads on hands, clothes and bedding.
- Place your rabbit in a sealed bag inside a lidded box, and keep the other rabbits away from the body and the hutch.
- Phone your vet before burying or disposing of anything. US federal guidance says to speak with a vet or an animal health official before you act.
- Bag the hay, bedding and litter, then set the bags aside somewhere separate until the vet has told you how to get rid of them.
- Scrub the enclosure, dishes and water bottle using whichever disinfectant your vet suggests, and allow it all to dry out completely.
- Ask about testing and vaccination for the survivors. Cremation is usually the safest choice for the body while you wait for answers.
Ways Urbandale families remember rabbits and guinea pigs
July afternoons in Urbandale can reach the upper 80s, and January nights average around 14 degrees, with frost in the ground from November through March. The season changes what the first few hours look like. A basement in August is much cooler than the main floor, while in winter an unheated garage keeps a body cold without any help. Keep other pets out of whichever space you use.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Urbandale?
The closest communities we cover are Clive (about 2 miles), Johnston (about 5 miles) and West Des Moines (about 6 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Urbandale too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Des Moines to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Des Moines (roughly 9 miles from Urbandale) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Urbandale?
January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 86°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Why does the Urbandale page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 63.6%[1] of Iowa residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I bury my rabbit in the garden in Iowa?
In most places you can bury a pet on land you own, sometimes with local conditions attached. Check with your local council or county if you're unsure, and ask your landlord if you rent. Dig deep enough that foxes and dogs won't reach your pet, set a slab on top, take extra care if your rabbit was put to sleep, and call a vet first if the death was sudden, because of RHDV2.
What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Urbandale?
Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.
