Cremation habits in Louisiana and your small pet
With about 46.4%[1] of people cremated, Louisiana leans toward burial, and pet crematoria can be farther apart. That matters less for small pets than for dogs, because a rabbit or chinchilla is easy to carry to a crematorium in a box on the passenger seat. What the rules in Louisiana mean for a rabbit or ferret
In the US, the USDA asks rabbit owners not to dispose of a rabbit's body without first consulting a veterinarian or animal health officials, because of RHDV2. That advice sits alongside any rules in Louisiana. In practice it means one phone call to the practice before you dig, any time a rabbit dies suddenly or for no clear reason. Guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas can't catch this virus.

Your first few hours, in order
- Tell the children simply and honestly. Use the word died rather than gone to sleep, which can frighten younger children.
- Let them see and stroke their pet if they'd like, with the body tucked into a fleece or well-loved blanket.
- Give them a job: lining the box, drawing something, or picking a toy or handful of hay to send along with their pet.

Why does the New Orleans page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.4%[1] of Louisiana residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from New Orleans?
Usually yes. Kenner is about 12 miles away, Slidell is about 29 miles away and St. George is about 64 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in New Orleans?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 90°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Is private cremation worth it for a guinea pig?
It is if you want the ashes back to keep, scatter or bury later, particularly if you might move house. If a garden grave or communal cremation feels right, there's no need to pay more. A guinea pig's size doesn't make either choice less meaningful; what matters is what you'll be glad of a year from now.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
Will I actually get ashes back from my guinea pig?
Yes, from a genuine private cremation. Ash is mostly processed bone, and a median-weight guinea pig returns about 37 g[8] by our estimate, a couple of tablespoons. A rabbit returns more, around 74 g[9]. Ask the provider how they keep very small pets separate, because the real risk isn't losing everything but mixing with other remains.
