Detroit's Public Works department collects deceased household pets from residences and city streets, but its collectors don't enter private property and won't pick up from commercial locations. Local funeral customs and a very small pet
With about 69.5%[1] of people in Michigan cremated, cremation is the majority choice but not an overwhelming one. That leaves room for local habits. In rented homes and apartments, private cremation is the practical route for a rabbit or ferret. In family homes with a yard, a garden grave is still common. Many families choose cremation specifically after a euthanasia, because the drug in the body can harm scavengers.

Cool, covered and safe: Detroit weather notes
If the ground is frozen through January, February, March and December and you've set your heart on a burial, a large outdoor planter can be a good stand-in. What the rules in Michigan mean for a rabbit or ferret
For small mammals, the rules worth knowing in Michigan cover three things: burying on your own property, scattering ashes, and what to do if a rabbit may have died of a disease such as RHDV2. The first two are straightforward. The third is a good reason to call your vet before a garden burial whenever a rabbit dies without warning.
Detroit's own guidance is published by City of Detroit Department of Public Works; it covers public collection, which is separate from arranging a private cremation. Michigan keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Detroit.

Step by step in Detroit
- Check gently and take a moment. Small pets often die quietly overnight. If you're unsure, look for breathing and a heartbeat; your vet can confirm by phone or in person.
- Let the bonded partner say goodbye. Leave the remaining pet with the body in a quiet spot for half an hour to an hour, then take them apart.
- Wrap your pet in a towel or fleece, then settle them into a carrier or shoebox. Find a cool spot for the box; if the weather is warm, seal them in a bag and use the fridge.
- Take a keepsake now if you'd like one: a clipping of fur or a clay print of a foot. It can't be done after cremation.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden, especially with a rabbit, so they can advise on RHDV2 before you bury anything or clean the hutch.
- Choose burial or cremation. For cremation, get a provider serving Detroit to confirm in writing that it's private.
- Watch the survivor for the next few days: eating, drinking and droppings.
Small keepsakes for a small life
Detroit winters are cold, with January lows around 19 degrees and snow from December into March. A pet's body left in an unheated garage or on a porch will freeze, so keep it in a cool room indoors. Does the Detroit climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Detroit?

Is it safe to keep a small pet's body in the garage in winter?
Yes, for a few days, if it's cold enough. Place your pet in a sealed plastic bag inside a sturdy box with a lid, and put it where cats, dogs, rodents and wildlife can't reach it. Label the box. If daytime temperatures rise above freezing, move it to a fridge or arrange collection sooner.
Is home collection available for small pets in Detroit?
Most larger providers in Detroit will collect from home, though for a small pet it isn't always worth the fee. Collection makes sense if you don't drive, have young children at home or live far from the crematorium. Ask the price upfront and whether they come out in the evening. In an apartment, a small pet can be carried down in a box without any special equipment.
Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
